[축구 인터뷰] 내가 좋아하는 축구클럽 - 영국문화원 인터뷰 07: 리버풀 FC

롤란드 데이비스 주한영국문화원장 – 축구경기 관전은 별로지만 아이들과 축구하는 것은 좋아요!  

 

오히 선생님 (이하 오히): 인터뷰에 응해줘서 고맙습니다. 자기 소개 좀 해주시겠어요?

롤란드 데이비스 (이하 롤란드): 제 이름은 롤란드 데이비스이고 주한영국문화원 원장입니다.

오히: 네, 고마워요. 본인이 좋아하는 축구 클럽에 대해 얘기해주시겠어요?

롤란드: 저는 어릴 때 북웨일즈 지역에서 자랐는데 가장 가까운 곳에 위치한 축구 클럽이 에버턴과 리버풀이었어요. 제가 왜 리버풀을 선택했는지 정확히 기억나지는 않지만 아마도 제가 빨간색을 좋아해서였거나 제 친구들이 응원했기 때문일 거에요. 아니면 70~80년대에 리버풀이 매우 좋은 성적을 거두었기 때문이든지요. 저는 리버풀에 굉장히 관심이 많았기 때문에 최대한 경기를 챙겨 보려고 했었어요. 요즘와서는 리버풀의 유럽 원정에 대한 라디오 프로그램을 듣곤 했어요. 그래서, 네, 리버풀이 제가 가장 좋아하는 팀이에요!

오히: 그럼 지금도 리버풀을 응원하세요?

롤란드: 아니오. 사실은 축구 경기 관람 자체에 대해서 흥미를 잃었어요. 하지만 여전히 종종 축구를 직접 하는 것은 즐겨요. 다만 축구 경기 보는 것을 그다지 즐기지 않게 된 것이지요.

오히: 월드컵에는 흥미가 있나요?

롤란드: 월드컵에도 별로 흥미가 없어요. 요즘 축구 경기는 매우 지루해졌어요. 팀들간의 수준도 평준화되었고, 특히 방어적인 플레이가 많이 발전했어요. 요새 축구는 선수들의 기술은 더 나아졌는지 모르겠지만 흥미는 줄어들었어요. 제가 기억하는 70~80년대 월드컵은 즐길만한 것이었지요. 그 당시는 축구 실력이 뛰어난 국가와 그렇지 못한 국가 간의 경기들도 자주 벌어졌고, 많은 득점이 터지는 경기나 어느 팀이든 이길 수 있는 여지가 있는 그런 경기들이 있었지만 지금은 그렇지 않아요. 모든 팀들이 다 잘 하지만 한편으로는 모든게 너무 통제되어 있어서 지루해요. 그래서 축구를 보지 않는거에요.

오히: 좀 서글픈 얘기네요.

롤란드: 전 신경쓰지 않아요!

오히: (웃음) 리버풀에서 가장 좋아했던 선수는 누구인가요?

롤란드: 음, 케빈 키건(Kevin Keegan)을 굉장히 좋아했어요. 그는 70,80년대의 스타에요. 케빈의 뒤를 이은 리버풀의 성공적인 메인 스트라이커는 케니 달글리시(Kenny Dalglish)인데 이 선수들을 좋아했지요. 그리고 강한 플레이를 보여주었던 토미 스미스(Tommy Smith)같은 미드필더 선수들이나 레이 케네디(Ray Kennedy)와 테리 맥더못(Terry McDermott)같은 훌륭한 선수들의 플레이를 보는 것을 좋아했어요. 스티브 하이웨이(Steve Heighway)라는 윙 포지션의 선수도 좋아했구요.

오히: 모두 70, 80년대에 뛴 선수들인가요?

롤란드: 네, 제 나이가 드러나네요!

오히: (웃음) 그렇군요. 확실히 축구에 흥미를 잃은 것으로 보이는데요, 가족들은 어때요? 축구에 관심이 좀 있나요?

롤란드: 아들과 딸은 종종 축구를 해요. 그리고 전 제 아이들과 함께 축구하는 것은 괜찮아요. 애들은 아직 축구 경기를 볼 만큼 충분히 크지는 않았어요. 하지만 이번 시즌부터는 사정이 좀 변할 거에요. 왜냐하면 웨일즈의 스완지 시티 클럽이 이번 시즌부터 프리미어리그로 승격되어 참가하고 있거든요. 제가 웨일즈 출신이고 여전히 그 곳에 연고가 있기 때문에 지금부터는 축구에 관심을 다시 갖기 시작할지도 모르겠어요. 제 가족이 스완지 근처 지역 출신이기 때문에 아마도 스완지를 응원하게 될 것 같아요. 제가 직접 경기를 볼 것 같진 않지만, 어쨌든요!

오히: 축구의 과거와 현재에 대해 얘기를 나눠봤네요.. 축구의 미래에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하세요? 어떤 일들이 생길까요?

롤란드: 개인적으로는 축구에 정말 관심이 없어요. 경기들은 계속 될 거고….축구는 큰 비즈니스가 된 것 같아요.

오히: 오..요즘에는 모든 스포츠들이 큰 산업이죠, 그렇죠?

롤란드: 네, 하지만 제가 그걸 좋아해야할 필요는 없잖아요? 산업화 되어 간다는 것은 한편으로는 스포츠의 가치를 잃어버리는 것이라고 생각해요. 예를 들면, 과거에는 축구 클럽들이 지역 사회에서 중심점이었는데 지금은 이러한 문화적 가치들을 잃었다고 여겨져요. 또한 지금의 잉글랜드 프리미어리그는 전세계에서 온 선수들로 구성이 되어 있어요. 약 70%의 EPL 선수들이 해외에서 온 선수들이죠. 지역 사회의 뿌리를 잃어가는 것도 문제이지만 마케팅과 거대 기업화도 문제에요. 다른 한편으로는, EPL에서 여러 국가의 선수들이 뛰기 때문에 보다 역동적이고 다양한 팀들이 되었다는 점은 흥미롭기도 해요.

하지만 많은 사람들이 그들이 지지하는 클럽과의 유대감을 잃었다고 생각해요. 대부분의 프리미어리그에 속한 클럽들이 예전에 연고지와 가졌던 유대감이 없어지고 있어요. 우리도 결국 그 지역과는 전혀 상관도 없이 독점 사업권을 가지고 만든 미국의 농구, 축구, 야구 클럽들처럼 될지도 모르겠어요. 예를 들면, 사실인지 아닌지는 잘 모르겠지만 LA 레이커스는 시카고에 연고를 두고 있다고 해요. (편집자주: LA 레이커스는 원래 미니애폴리스를 연고로 해서 창단이 되었고 연고지를 LA로 옮기면서 팀 이름도 변경되었습니다.시카고와는 관련이 없는 것으로 확인됩니다.) 그들이 처음 창설된 지역과는 전혀 연관이 없는 것이지요.

오히: 흥미롭네요.. 프리미어리그에도 그런 일이 일어날까요?

롤란드: 몇 년 전에 이미 일어나기 시작했다고 봐요. 윔블던 축구 클럽은 원래 런던 남쪽의 윔블던에서 창단되었지만 런던의 북쪽에 있는 밀턴 케인스(Milton Keynes)로 연고지를 옮겼어요. (편집자주: 연고지를 옮기면서 팀 이름도 밀턴 케인스 던스 FC(Milton Keynes Dons FC)로 변경되었습니다.) 아직은 이 케이스 하나 뿐이지만 영국에서도 그런 일들이 일어날 수 있음을 보여주고 있어요.

오히: 슬픈 일이네요.

롤란드: 난 전혀 신경 안쓴다니까요!^^

오히: 시간내줘서 고마워요, 롤란드.

롤란드: 천만에요! 


 

 

Football Focus: interview with the Director of the British Council Korea

Now we focus our intentions on our top man…Roland Davies

Ohee: Thanks for taking part in the interview…can you please introduce yourself?

Roland: My name is Roland Davies and I am the country director of the British Council in Korea.

Ohee: Thanks. Can you please tell us about your favourite football club?

Roland: I grew up as a child in North Wales and the nearest football clubs were Everton and Liverpool. I don’t clearly remember why I chose Liverpool as my team; perhaps I liked red colour; or maybe that was the club my friends supported; or probably Liverpool were very successful during the 70’s and 80’s. I was very interested in Liverpool and I tried to watch them as often as I could. In those days, I used to listen to radio programmes as Liverpool travelled around Europe… so, yes, Liverpool were my favourite team!

Ohee: OK…so do you support them now?

Roland: No, I don’t. I lost interest in football really as a game to watch. I still enjoy playing it from time to time. I don’t really enjoy watching football much.

Ohee: Are you interested in the World Cup?

Roland: No, I’m not even interested in the World Cup! Modern football has become quite boring; what has happened is that teams have become evenly matched. In particular, defensive play has improved a lot. You can say that football these days is technically better but it’s also less exciting. The World Cups I remember back in the 70’s and 80’s were enjoyable. Quite often you had a real mismatch; you had strong countries and very weak ones; there were high scoring games and open games which any team could win. However, nowadays, you don’t get that. Every team is good, it’s all very controlled and it’s quite boring, really; that’s why I don’t really watch football.

Ohee: Oh, that’s quite sad.

Roland: Oh, I don’t mind!

Ohee: [laughs] who were your favourite players from Liverpool?

Roland: Well, I really liked Kevin Keegan; he was a star in the 70’s and 80’s. He was succeeded as a main striker by Kenny Dalglish. I really liked those players. I also enjoyed watching midfield players such as Tommy Smith who was a strong player and there were players like Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott and they were very good players. I liked a footballer called Steve Heighway who played on the wing.

Ohee: Did they play in the seventies and eighties?

Roland: Yes, I’m showing my age!

Ohee: [laughs] OK…you have clearly lost interest in football. What about your family? Are they interested in football?

Roland: My son and daughter enjoy playing football and I don’t mind playing with my children; they are probably not old enough to watch football. However, things may change this year because a club from Wales is participating in the Premiership from this season: Swansea City. I might start to take an interest in football because I am from Wales and I have connections so it will be meaningful to me. My family is from a place near Swansea so perhaps I will support Swansea. I probably won’t watch any of their games, but anyway!

Ohee: So we discussed about the past and present… how do you view football in the future? What do you think will happen to the game?

Roland: Well…I’ve lost interest really – I don’t have any personal interest in football. The game will carry on…and to me it has become a big business.

Ohee: Oh…I think most sport is big businesses these days, do you agree?

Roland: Yes, but I don’t have to like it, do I? I think in becoming a business, you lose some of the sporting values. For instance, I think football clubs have lost some of the cultural values because clubs were a focal point for local communities in the past. Nowadays, most English Premier League (EPL) teams are made up of players from all over the world, for example, about 70% of EPL players are overseas players. I believe that it has not only lost the roots in community but it has also become a marketing and business empire. On the one hand, it’s great to have exciting players from different countries in EPL because the teams are more dynamic and different…and then I think a lot of people lost their sense of connection with their clubs; most EPL clubs are losing connection with local communities they once had. We may end up with something similar to football, basketball and baseball clubs in the U.S.A. where the teams are essentially franchises and they have no connection with the actual city. For example, I don’t know whether this is true or not but the L.A. Lakers are based in Chicago; they’ve lost touch with original place they were born.

Ohee: Interesting…do you think it could happen in the EPL?

Roland: I think it happened a couple of years ago. For instance, Wimbledon Football Club is originally from South London but they have relocated to Milton Keynes which is in the north of London. This is the only example so far, it shows that is possible and it can happen in the U.K.

Ohee: Oh, that’s sad.

Roland: I don’t really care!

Ohee: Thank you for your time, Roland.

Roland: No problem!
