아스날 우승을 위한 제안 – 세스크 파브레가스가 필요해!

프리미어리그 시즌이 끝났고 가장 슬픈 사실 중의 하나는 우리 아스날이 올해도 트로피를 들어올리지 못했다는 것이 아니라 – 물론 그것도 매우 기분좋지 않은 일이지만 - 아스날의 가장 훌륭한 선수 중의 한 명에 대해 피할 수 없는 소동이 일어났다는 것일 것이다. 2003/2004 무패우승 시즌 이후로, 아르센 벵거 감독은 장기적인 관점에서 전도 유망한 어린 선수들로 팀을 꾸렸다. 하지만 그에 대한 전제 조건은 키 플레이어가 팀에 남아야 한다는 것이고 그 결실을 통해서 비젼을 볼 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 전제 조건이 계속 이야기되어 왔다는 것을 나도 알지만, 지난 두 시즌 동안 키 플레이어들의 부상이 없었다면, 아스날은 지금과는 매우 다른 상황에 있었을 것이다. 내 포인트는 간단하다. 세스크를 팔지 말라는 것이다!

카탈루냐 출신인 우리의 젊은 피 세스크는 아스날 팀의 심장이며 Tony Gale(해설자 주: 스카이 스포츠TV의Soccer Saturday프로그램의 해설자이자 영국 타블로이드신문 더 선紙에 평론을 싣고 있는 선수 출신의 축구 전문가)의 매치 코멘터리에 자주 등장하는 비범한 능력의 소유자다. 잠재력을 알아보는데 재빠른 판단력을 가진 아르센 벵거 감독이 패트릭 비에이라를 팔고 16세의 어린 세스크를 1군에 올린 일은 그가 얼마나 대단한 선수인지를 보여주는 증거이다. 결론은 간단하다. 우리가 승리를 하고 싶다면, 단순히 좋은 선수가 아닌 월드 클래스의 선수가 팀의 중심이 되어야 한다. 그리고 세스크가 바로 월드 클래스의 선수 혹은 최소한 월드 클래스에 근접한 선수이다. 아스톤 빌라와의 경기에서 경기의 흐름을 바꿔놓은 그의 순간적인 능력은 내가 지금까지 본 경기 중 예술적인 기교가 가장 잘 접목된 순간이었다. 재시동이 늦게 걸리는 토트넘을 상대로 허를 찌르는 그의 모습은 나의 자부심을 가득 채워주었다. 그는 완벽한 미드필더이다. 그는 태클을 하고, 달린다. 그의 패스 능력은 세계 최고라 불러도 손색이 없다. 게다가 그는 득점까지 한다. 2004/2005 시즌에는 리그 33경기에 출전해서 2골과 4개 도움을 기록했다. 지난 시즌에는 27 경기에 출전해서 15골과 15도움을 만들어 냈다. 그리고 그는 이제 겨우 23살이다.

나도 언젠가는 세스크가 떠날 것이라는 것을 안다. 그는 언젠가 짐을 싸서 고향으로 돌아가고 싶다고 밝힌 적이 있는데, 솔직히, 그를 비난할 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없다. 그는 카탈루냐 사람이다. 그곳에는 그의 뿌리가 있다. 그의 가족이 있고, 그가 어린 시절을 보낸 클럽(편집자주: 바르셀로나)이 있다. 이것은 명백한 사실이다. 기회가 주어진다면, 나라도 이슬링턴(편집자주:아스날)보다는 바르셀로나를 택할 것 같다. 하지만 이것은 간단한 일은 아니다. 북런던의 술집에서 뱀장어요리를 먹는 것도 좋지만, 람블라스 거리(편집자주: 바르셀로나 관광 중심 거리)의 야외 카페에서 타파스(편집자주: 여러 가지 요리를 조금씩 담아내는 스페인식 요리)를 먹는 것이 분명 더 유혹적일 것이다. 스페인에는 좋은 날씨는 물론 뜨거운 피가 흐르는 라틴계 미녀들과 가우디의 아름다운 건축물 등 젊은이를 위한 모든 것이 갖춰져 있다. 극도로 미묘한 협상의 문제이긴 하지만 아스날과 그의 계약은 2015년까지이다. 그에게 최고의 플레이어가 될 기회를 준 것은 바로 아스날과 아르센 벵거 감독이었다. 그를 마음 속에 품고 그를 지지해 준 사람들은 바로 아스날의 팬들이다. 나는 이 작은 빚을 우승 트로피로 갚으라는 요구가 지나치다고는 생각하지 않는다. 앞에서 말한 것처럼 나는 이적을 원하는 그의 마음에 분노하지 않는다. 하지만 그에게 우리가 원하는 것을 그가 가져다 줄 수 있는 기회를 줘야한다. 그것은 바로 프리미어리그 우승컵이다. 그는 아스날과 아스날의 팬들에게 빚을 졌다.

과거에는 벵거 감독이 선수생활의 정점에 있는 뛰어난 선수들을 팔고, 항상 그 자리를 동등한 가치를 가진 어린 선수들로 채우곤 했다. 티에리 앙리가 나가고 그 자리를 로빈 반 페르시가 채웠고, 패트릭 비에이라의 자리에는 세스크가 버티고 있다. 그러나 앙리와 비에이라가 있을 떄 우리는 최고의 시절을 보냈고 우승도 몇 번 차지할 수 있었다. 세스크는 분명 성장하고 있다. 그리고 세스크가 만들어낼 가장 큰 성과를 차지해야 할 것은 바로 아스날이다. 속담에도 나와 있듯이 우리는 뿌린 대로 거둘 것이고, 우리에게는 그 뿌린 씨앗인 세스크가 있다. 세스크와 반 페르시가 부상 없는 시즌을 보낸다면, 우리는 아스날이 우승하는 모습을 볼 수 있게 될 것이다. 그리고 이것이 바로 내가 이번 여름 아스날이 이적시장  비즈니스에서 성공하고 세스크를 팀에 남도록 만들기를 바라는 이유이기도 하다.

Don’t sell Cesc

The saddest thing about the Premier league season just gone isn’t that we were left trophy-less again, although that does suck quite badly, but the inevitable furore that has again sprung up around one of our best players. Since the invincibles of the 2003-2004 season, Arsene has been putting together a team of young promising players who can win things in the long term, but the proviso is that the key players stay with Arsenal and see the vision through to fruition. I know it has been said and re-said, but if it weren’t for key injuries over the last two seasons, this arsenal team could be in a very different position today. My point is simple: Don’t sell Cesc.

Our young Catalonian is the heartbeat of this Arsenal team and a prodigious talent that appears about as often as an insightful comment during a Tony Gale match commentary. The fact that Arsene Wenger, one of the most astute judges of potential, stuck him in the first team at the tender age of 16 and went on to sell Patrick Viera is testament to just how good this kid is. It is simple: If we want to win things, we need a spine of players who are not just good, but who are world class, and Cesc falls into this category or is at least on the brink of it. His cameo performance against Aston Villa to turn the game was one of the finest moments of artistry and graft that I have ever seen. His run through the Spurs team to capitalise on their slack restart made me glow with pride. He is a complete midfielder. He can tackle. He can run. His ability to pick passes has to be up there with the best in the world. Added to this he can also score goals – in the 2004-2005 league season he got 2 goals and 4 assists from 33 appearances. At the end of our last season, he had 15 goals and 15 assists from 27 appearances. He is still only 23.

I know that Cesc is going to leave us. He has made it clear that he wants to pack his bathing trunks and head back home, and to be honest, who can blame him. He is a Catalan. That is where his roots are. That is where his family is, and that is where his boyhood club is. It is inevitable. Given the chance, I myself would probably pick Barcelona over Islington. It is something of a no brainer. Jellied eels in a north London boozer might be nice for a one off, but scoffing tapas in an outdoor café on La Rambla is infinitely more inviting. They’ve got the weather, the hot blooded Latina belles, and those curious skeletal melting buildings by Gaudi, all in all a complete package for a young lad. But, and this is said with the utmost delicacy and diplomacy, he has a contract with us until 2015. It was Arsenal and Arsene Wenger who gave him the opportunity to become the player that he is. It is the Arsenal fans who have supported him and taken him into our hearts. And it is not too much to ask, I don’t think, that a little bit of this debt is repaid in the form of silverware. As I said, I don’t resent his desire to move, but we have brought him to this point in his career where he can help deliver what we all want – a premier league title. He owes the Arsenal, and he owes the fans.

In times past, Arsene has sold players, great players, arguably at the peak of their careers, but he has always replaced them with equally good young ones. Thierry Henry goes and Robin van Persie fills the hole. Patrick Viera goes and Cesc is waiting, but with Henry and Viera, we got to enjoy some of their best years, and won some trophies with them; whereas with Cesc, he is still improving, and it’s Arsenal who should get to reap the best of what he has to offer. It’s all there in the proverb: You reap what you sow, and boy have we sown. If we can have one season where both he and Van Persie stay fit, we might see a team who can actually win something, and it is for this reason that I pray that the Arsenal business machine takes the summer off and Arsenal football club is left to settle the Cesc affair.

대학에서는 사회과학을 전공했는데 제 주변에는 맨체스터유니이티드와 리버풀 팬들 뿐이어서 제가 자랑스럽게 아스날의 유니폼을 입고 다니기라도 하면, 다들 놀리곤 하였답니다. 하지만 감사하게도 아스날이 아르센 벵거 감독님의 지휘 아래 97-98 시즌에 더블을 기록함으로써 저는 그 해 여름내내 친구들에게 으시대고 다닐 수 있었습니다. 

대학 졸업 후 보다폰이 맨유의 스폰서를 하던 시절 보다폰 영업사원으로 잠시 일했었는데 아무래도 맨유의 분위기가 너무 강해서 오래지 않아 그만두고 직업을 전격적으로 바꾸어 영어를 가르치는 강사가 되어 2002년 월드컵 직후에 한국에 처음으로 오게 되었습니다. 그 이후 러시아, 호주, 다시 영국을 거쳐서 지금 한국에 다시 돌아왔지요.

지금 저는 주한영국문화원 어학센터 영어교사로 일하고 있으며 부인과 2살 난 딸과 함께 올림픽 공원 근처에서 살고 있습니다.  Creative writing 전공으로 석사 과정 마지막 학기인데, 저의 글쓰기 활동이 장차 여행, 아스날 응원, 그리고 비치 풋볼을 하면서 살아가는데 유용하게 사용되기를 바라고 있답니다. 결코 희망을 버리지 않으며!

My name is Dan Conyers and I am from the UK. I grew up in East Anglia, and due to the fortunate interference of some good friends, I dodged the very real possibility of becoming a Norwich City FC fan, and instead became hooked on the red and white of Arsenal, dazzled by the mercurial talents of Dennis Bergkamp and Ian Wright, and later Thierry Henry.

I went to University in the north of England where I studied Social Science and where, surrounded by hordes of Mancs and Scousers, I proudly wore the replica shirt of my club, taking the taunts and jibes that were thrown my way with good humour. An easy feat thanks to the success of the early Wenger teams especially the 97-98 double winning side that gave me the bragging rights over the vast majority of my university friends for the entire summer.

After university, I worked briefly as a mobile phone salesman for Vodafone but the strong smell of Manchester United became too much, and I jumped whole heartedly into EFL teaching, coming first to Korea in 2002 after the world cup, then going to Russia, Australia, and back to the UK for a while before coming back to the Korea where I now live.

I currently work for the British Council, and live near Olympic Park with my wife and two-year-old daughter. I am in the final year of a post-graduate course in creative writing, and I hope to go on to use my writing to support a life of travelling, supporting Arsenal, and playing beach football. Hope springs eternal!
