[어린이 영어 5] 미국 영어? 영국 영어? 과연 미국 영어가 대세?

사람들은 미국과 영국이 국제어로서의 영어의 전파에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다는 이유로 영어를 영국 영어와 미국 영어로 크게 분류하곤 합니다. 비록 현재 영어는 전세계 수백만명의 사람들이 사용하는 국제어지만, 여전히 미국영어와 영국영어 사이에는 약간의 차이가 존재합니다. 영어를 학습하는 수많은 사람들이 미국영어와 영국영어 사이에서 어떤 쪽이 더 올바르고 많이 쓰는 표현이며, 따라서 학습의 기준으로 삼아야 하는지 궁금해 합니다. 여기에 대한 가장 단순한 대답은 어느 쪽도 아니다일 것 입니다. 또한 그 질문 자체도 오늘날의 영어라는 언어에 대해 지나치게 단순하게 생각한 결과입니다.

영국영어와 미국영어는 본질적으로 같은 언어이나, 미묘한 차이가 존재합니다. 특히 발음에 있어서의 차이는 쉽게 눈에 띄는 부분입니다. 예를 들어 미국영어는 r 발음이 두드러지지만, 영국, 특히 잉글랜드 지방의 영어 발음은 그렇지 않습니다. 발음뿐 아니라 어휘에 있어서도 차이가 존재합니다. 예를 들어 손전등이란 단어는 영국영어는 torch, 미국영어는 flash light라고 표현합니다. 문화적 배경의 차이에 따라 사용하는 관용구 또한 조금씩 다릅니다. 그러나 글쓰기에 있어서는 큰 차이가 존재하지 않으며, 사소한 스펠링의 차이 이외에는 본질적으로 동일한  방법으로 구성됩니다. 따라서 어떤 사람이 말하는 억양으로 영국인이냐 미국인이냐를 구분할 수는 있지만, 미국영어나 영국영어라는 분류 또한 하위에 다양한 방언이나 억양이 존재합니다. 이러한 이유로 표준 미국영어와 영국영어라는 것은 실제로는 존재하지 않습니다.

영어를 가지고 미국영어냐 영국영어냐를 구분하는 것은 마치 세상에 크게 미국영어와 영국영어 두 가지만 존재하는 것 같은 인상을 불러일으키기 쉽습니다. 그러나 실제로는 영국영어나 미국영어 이외에도 다양한 영어가 존재합니다. 같은 영어권 국가이지만 호주, 뉴질랜드, 남아프리카 공화국, 캐나다 같은 영연방 국가들에서 사용되는 영어는 미국영어나 영국영어와는 다르고, 이외에도 인도, 싱가포르, 홍콩, 필리핀, 말레이시아, 나이지리아처럼 영어가 자국 언어와 함께 의사 소통의 주요 수단으로 사용되는 나라들도 존재합니다. 이 나라들 또한 발음 면에서 각기 다른 영어를 구사합니다. 뿐만 아니라 영어를 연구 및 비즈니스에서 주요 의사소통 수단으로 사용하는 나라의 숫자는 계속해서 증가하는 추세입니다. 각 나라에서 사용되는 영어의 차이점을 구분하는 것도 중요하지만, 문법, 어휘, 발음 면에서 눈에 띄게 큰 차이는 존재하지 않는다는 점을 기억해야 합니다. 영어권 국가에서 온 사람들에게 당신이 사용하는 언어는 무엇이냐고 묻는다면, 모두 영어라고 대답하지 미국영어를 한다거나 영국영어를 한다고는 대답하지 않습니다.

이러한 사실을 감안하면, 영어학습자들이 가장 많이 사용되는, 이른바 표준이라고 간주되는 영어를 공부하고자 한다는 사실 자체는 이해할 만 하나, 실제로는 규정된 표준 영어라는 것은 존재하지 않으며, 영어 사용의 기준은 누구와 대화하느냐에 따라 달라집니다. 특정 국가에서 온 사람들하고만 영어로 대화를 주고받는 것이 아닌 한, 미국영어 또는 영국영어라는 특정 영어의 사용에만 익숙해지는 것은 하등 이로울 것이 없습니다. 대부분의 영어학습자들에게 영어라는 것은 이 국제화된 세계를 살아가는 방법으로서의 의미를 가질 것입니다. 따라서 영국영어, 미국영어뿐 아니라 남아메리카 공화국의 영어, 인도에서 사용되는 영어 등 많은 다양한 영어를 알게 되는 것이 더욱 바람직할 것입니다.

American English is superior to British English or vice versa?

English is often divided into two varieties – British and American, due to the fact that historically both have had the greatest influence in the spread of English.  Although English is now used by millions of people worldwide, the distinction between British and American English remains.  Learners of English, aware of this distinction, often wonder which variety is the most authoritative and worth learning. The answer to put it simply is neither, and the very question itself is an oversimplification of English in the world today.

British and American English are the same language, but there are some slight differences. Variation is most noticeable in pronunciation, a good example being that North America typically has a rhotic accent e.g.  /r/ is always pronounced where there is an r in the spelling, and most of England, has a non-rhotic accent. In addition to general pronunciation, there are some minor variations in lexis e.g. torch (British English) and flash-light (American English) and of course idiomatic language which is often culturally embedded.  Writing, however, tends to be fairly standard with English users the world over generally conforming to the same norms, with only minor variations in spelling.  Although it is possible to distinguish between someone from Britain and America by the way they speak, the reality however is that these respective ‘varieties’ consist of numerous regional accents and dialects, and that many academics now agree that identifying a standard British and American English is impossible.

Thinking of English as either British or American can also give the impression that only two types of English are spoken in the world today, when in fact numerous spoken varieties exist. In addition to a core group of English speaking countries like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and Canada, which often distinguish themselves from Britain and America and each other through accent and colloquialisms, there are also other countries where English is regularly used like India, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Nigeria each of which could be said to have their own variety even if only according to pronunciation. On top of these, there is an ever growing number of countries around the world where English has become the language of business and science.  Although it is important to recognize these varieties, it should be remembered that none drift too far from the core grammar, lexis and sounds of English. Ask any English speaker what language they speak and they will tell you “English” as opposed to “I speak American English.”

So where does this leave the English language learner? It is understandable that learners want to learn the most authoritative form of a language; the form that is considered the standard. The reality though, is that there is no one single authoritative form as norms vary according to who you are communicating with.  Unless someone knows they will only ever be using English with a group of people from a specific area, there is little advantage in being exposed to only one variety. For most learners however, English is a means to connect with the globalized world, and thus exposure to a variety of Englishes, be they British, American, South African or Indian, can only be a positive.
