2010 월드컵 우승 후보국을 예상해보세요!

4년 전 독일에서 막을 내렸던 축구의 향연 월드컵이 다시 한번 우리 곁으로 다가왔습니다. 이번 대회에서는 어떤 나라들이 우승 후보일까요? 브라질이 6회 우승을 달성할 수 있을까요? 이탈리아가 월드컵 타이틀을 수성할 수 있을까요? 유럽 챔피언 스페인은 어떨까요? 독일이 재기하여 1990년 이래 처음으로 우승컵을 거머쥘 수 있을까요? 

7억 명 이상의 시청자가 2006년 월드컵 결승에서 이탈리아가 프랑스를 극적으로 누르는 광경을 지켜봤습니다. 2010년 월드컵에서는 과연 어느 나라가 7월 11일 일요일 결승전에 진출하게 될지 수 많은 축구팬들의 관심이 집중되고 있습니다.

브라질

지난 월드컵에서 실망을 안겨줬던 브라질은 이번 대회에서 강력한 우승 후보로 손꼽히고 있습니다. 1994년 대회에 선수로 참가하여 브라질의 우승을 견인했던 카를로스 둥가(Carlos Dunga) 감독은 월드컵을 5차례 차지한 브라질 대표팀을 새로운 방식으로 지휘하고 있습니다. 그가 지휘봉을 잡은 지난 2년간 브라질은 2007년 코파아메리카컵 우승과 지난해 컨페더레이션스컵 우승을 비롯하여 치열한 남미 지역 예선을 1위로 통과하는 등 24게임에서 단 1패만을 기록하는 쾌조의 성적을 거뒀습니다.

브라질 대표팀과 선수들의 경기력에 대해서는 모르는 사람이 없겠지만, 이번 대표팀은 정신적으로나 신체적으로나 과거 대회의 선배들을 능가합니다. 카카(Kaka), 호비뉴(Robinho), 루이스 파비아노(Luis Fabiano) 같은 측면 공격수들은 가공할 파괴력을 뽐내고 있습니다. 본선 진출 팀 중 여기에 필적할 전력을 가진 나라는 거의 없습니다. 이러한 이유에서, 수백만 명의 팬들이 브라질의 6회 우승이라는 신기원을 예상하고 있습니다.   

이탈리아

전 대회 우승국인 이탈리아는 4년 전에 비해 전력이 크게 약화됐습니다. 지난해 컨페더레이션스컵에서는 1차 예선에서 탈락한 바 있습니다. 현재 대표팀의 사령탑을 맡고 있는 마르첼로 리피(Marcello Lippi) 감독은 이번 월드컵이 끝나면 체사레 프란델리(Cesare Prandelli) 감독으로 교체될 예정입니다. 리피 감독은 자신에게 친숙한 얼굴들로 대표팀을 구성했습니다. 그 결과 지난 대회 우승 멤버 12명이 이번에도 국가대표로 발탁됐습니다. 카나바로(Cannavaro), 데 로시(De Rossi), 잠브로타(Zambrotta) 같은 빼어난 선수들이 대표팀에 포함되어 있지만, 과연 이들이 또다시 우승을 일궈낼 정신력과 스태미나를 갖추고 있을까요? 시간이 말해줄 것입니다.

월드컵 역사를 돌이켜 보면 이탈리아는 기대 이상의 성적을 올린 적이 많았습니다. 1982년과 1994년 그리고 2006년이 그 예입니다. 이탈리아는 2차 세계대전 이전까지 두 차례 우승컵을 안았지만, 당시는 지금과는 상황이 달랐습니다. 아주리 군단은 파라과이, 뉴질랜드, 슬로바키아와 함께 ‘수월한 조’에 편성됐습니다. 16강에는 무난히 진출하겠지만, 이탈리아가 결승에까지 도달하리라고 믿는 팬은 거의 없습니다.  

스페인

여기 우리가 다시 간다! 스페인은 2년마다 열리는 주요 국제 대회에서 항상 우승 후보로 지목되곤 했지만 매번 결과는 어땠습니까? 늘 우승의 희망을 품고 대회에 나서지만 결국에는 본선에서 탈락하곤 했습니다. 매 대회마다 되풀이되는 익숙한 줄거리지만 이번에는 정말로 우승을 달성할 수 있을까요? 스페인은 좌절을 상징하는 단어가 돼버렸습니다.  

하지만 올해는 이야기가 다릅니다. 스페인은 2008년 유럽 챔피언의 자리에 우아하게 등극하면서 전세계에 그들의 능력을 증명했습니다. 스페인은 더이상 좌절을 상징하지 않습니다. 팬과 언론은 스페인의 성공과 박진감 넘치는 공격적인 플레이를 보고 지금까지의 생각을 바꾸게 되었습니다. 마침내 스페인이 월드컵 우승 트로피를 들어 올리게 될 날이 도래했는지도 모릅니다. 스페인의 최근 성적은 우승 후보로서의 면모를 뒷받침하고 있습니다. 스페인은 45경기를 치르는 동안 단 1패만을 기록했습니다. 103골을 득점하고 41승을 올리는 인상적인 전적을 남겼습니다. 월드컵 조별 예선에서도 전승을 기록했으며 아르헨티나, 잉글랜드, 프랑스와의 평가전에서도 모두 승리를 거뒀습니다. 이번 대회야말로 스페인이 자신들의 능력을 전세계에 과시하고 역사를 써내려 갈 기회입니다.

독일

독일은 역대 월드컵 본선에서 경이로운 성적을 올렸습니다. 우승 3회, 준우승 4회를 기록했으며 세 차례에 걸쳐 3위 자리에 올랐습니다. 많은 이들은 독일이 이처럼 성공을 거둘 수 있었던 이유로 전술적인 완성도와 효율성을 꼽습니다. 불행하게도, 지난 3월 아르헨티나와의 평가전에서 1대0으로 패한 뒤로 독일 대표팀은 거센 비난에 휩싸여 있습니다. 포돌스키(Podolski)나 타치(Tasci) 같은 선수들은 정상 컨디션을 찾지 못하고 있으며 요하임 뢰브(Joachim Low) 감독은 언론과 팬들로부터 신임을 얻지 못하고 있습니다. 또 하나의 불안 요인은 계약 연장을 둘러싼 뢰브 감독과 독일 축구협회 간의 불협화음입니다. 설상가상으로 대표팀 내에서 높은 영향력을 가진 주장 미하엘 발락(Michael Ballack)이 잉글랜드 FA컵 결승에서 발목 부상을 입으면서 본선 출전이 좌절됐습니다. 긍정적인 측면을 찾자면, 독일은 매번 주요 대회에 나설 때마다 중압감을 안고 경기에 임했다는 자랑스러운 기록을 갖고 있으며 이번 월드컵도 예외는 아닐 것입니다.

지금까지 이번 월드컵의 우승 후보들을 살펴봤습니다. 여러분은 어느 나라가 우승 트로피를 차지할 것으로 예상하시나요? 주한영국문화원 강사들 사이에서는 월드컵에 대한 열기를 더하기 위해 우승팀을 예상하는 내기가 진행 중입니다. 우승팀을 맞힌 사람은 40만원을 받게 됩니다! 필자는 돈을 딸 확률이 꽤 높다고 생각하는 독일을 선택했습니다만, 적어도 주한영국문화원에서는 현재 브라질이 우승 후보 1순위군요!

World Cup Favourites

The world cup has descended on us again after the last football party in Germany. Who are the favourites this time round? Can Brazil win it for the sixth time? Can Italy retain the title? What about the current European champions, Spain? Will the Germans bounce back and win their first world cup since 1990?

More than 700 million people watched Italy’s dramatic win over France in the 2006 final. Millions of fans will be wondering which teams are going to make it on Sunday 11 July.

Brazil

The Brazilians are the favourites to win the trophy after the disappointment in the last world cup. The current team is managed by Carlos Dunga, a world cup winning player back in 1994, has taken a different approach to managing the five-time world champions. His team’s record over two years makes a good reading with one defeat in 24 games which includes the Copa America victory in 2007, Confederations cup victory last year and they topped the tough South American qualifying group.

We all know about Brazil and their skillful way of playing, but this team is mentally and physically stronger than their predecessors. However, the side has ample firepower in Kaka, Robinho and Luis Fabiano. They should be more than match for most teams in the tournament. As a result, millions of fans will expect nothing less than a record sixth victory.

Italy

The current world champions have been struggling form since they won the cup four years ago. The team was knocked out from the first round in the confederations cup last year. Marcello Lippi is currently in charge of the team and he will be replaced by Cesare Prandelli after the world cup. Lippi sticks with the faces he knows, which means 12 members of the world cup winning squad are in the current side. Quality players such as Cannavaro, De Rossi and Zambrotta are in the team but will they have the motivation and physical stamina necessary to win another world cup? Time will tell.

History tells us that the Italians often overachieve in World Cups; for example: 1982, 1994 and 2006. The team won two world cups before the War, but that was in a different era. The Azzuri are placed in an ‘easy group’ which consists of Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia; they should reach the knockout stages but many fans don’t expect the team to reach the final.

Spain

Here we go again! Spain is usually regarded as favourites to win a major event every two years and then what happens? They enter a tournament with high hopes believing the team can actually win and somehow they get beaten in the knock-out stages. Same old story, but could the Spaniards really win it this year? Spain has become a byword for failure.

This year it is a different story. Spain showed the world what they are capable of by winning the 2008 European championship in style. They are no longer regarded as failure; the fans and the media have been converted by their on-pitch success and exciting, attacking style of play. The time for the Spaniards to lift their first world cup might well have arrived. Spain’s recent record backs them as favourites; they have played 45 games and lost only once during that time. Impressive statistics read 103 goals scored and 41 wins. The side also has a 100% record in the world cup qualifying group and has beaten Argentina, England and France in friendly matches. This is the time for the Spaniards to prove themselves to the world and make history.

Germany

The Germans have a wonderful track record in World Cup finals: three-time champions, runners-up on four occasions, and they have reached third spot three times. Many argue that the key to German success is tactical discipline and efficiency. Unfortunately, the national team has come under heavy criticism since a 1-0 loss against Argentina last March. Players such as Podolski and Tasci have struggled for form and the coach, Joachim Low, is subject to disapproval by both the media and fans alike. Another factor adding to the negative atmosphere was a disagreement between Low and the German FA on contract extension. To heap even more woes on the team, their influential captain, Michael Ballack, has been ruled out of the finals with an ankle injury sustained in the English FA cup final. On the positive side, the Germans have a proud record of playing under pressure in major tournaments and this year will be no exception.

Now you know the favourites for this year’s world cup, can you guess who will win the trophy? The teachers at the British Council placed bets on which team will win the tournament. The teacher with the winning team will become 400,000 won richer! I drew Germany, which I believe gives me a fairly good chance of coming away with the money but at the moment, Brazil is on the top of the list at least in the British Council Korea!
