강의 내용
Over the last couple centuries many scholars have suggested that with the rise of science and technology religion would be increasingly marginal.  Some even suggested that active participation in religion would almost entirely cease.  This lecture examines the intellectual and ethnographic basis of these theoretical propositions.  It argues that these approaches are problematic for both theoretical and ethnographic reasons: their arguments are largely based on linear, euro-centric evolutionary models; their models both misunderstand the nature of cultural development and impose western models and priorities on cultures that are based on very different world views; their arguments also do not sufficiently explain ethnographic evidence from both the West and other parts of the world, in which against their expectations religion continues to be a significant force.  The lecture also challenges the institutional bias of much sociological discussions of religion in favour of a more personalized identity-based approach.

교수 약력
Professor Seth Kunin is the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Arts and Humanities) at Durham University.
He graduated from Columbia University (USA) and later took MA at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and a PhD at Cambridge University. His first lectureship in theology was at Nottingham University. He moved to the University of Aberdeen in 1999 as Senior Lecturer, becoming head of the School of Divinity & Religious studies in 2001 and a Professor two years later. He was an Acting Dean at Aberdeen and Deputy Head and Director of Research in the College of Arts & Social Sciences. Professor Kunin moved to Durham University in 2005 and took up his current post as Pro-Vice Chancellor (arts and Humanities).  He has a strong research profile and links with universities in the UK, Ireland and North America. The area of his specialism includes Hebrew myth and other aspects of Judaism, and his recent publications include Religion: The Modern Theories (Edinburgh University Press, 2003); We Think What We Eat: Neo-Structuralist Analysis of Israelite Food Rules and Other Cultural and Textual Practices (T & T Clark. 2004); Juggling Identities: Identity and Authenticity Among the Crypto-Jews (Columbia University Press, 2009).
