영국의 축구팬들은 다르다

사람들은 영국 축구가 사양길에 접어들었다고 말합니다. 경기력은 물론이고 창의력에서도 다른 나라에 뒤집니다. 자국 리그는 외국인 선수들로 홍수를 이루고 있습니다. 하지만 그라운드에서 눈을 들어 스탠드를 바라보면 전세계 축구팬들에게 강력한 영향력을 행사하고 있는 영국의 열성팬들이 자리잡고 있는 것이 보일 것입니다. 사이먼 쿠퍼는 영국의 축구팬에 대해 다음과 같이 설명합니다.

다른 나라의 골수 축구팬들은 영국 축구팬들의 응원 문화에 경탄하곤 합니다. 일부 해외 팬들은 영국을 모방한 나머지, 자국의 구장 스탠드에 유니온잭을 내걸기도 하고 축구경기장에서 영국 응원가를 부르기도 합니다. 어버론 워(Auberon Waugh)가 ‘노동계급의 국가(國歌)’라고 칭송했던 「Here We Go」는 과거 사회주의 혁명가 「인터내셔널의 노래(Internationale)」가 그랬던 것처럼 유럽 전역으로 전파되었습니다. 이 외에도 영국 축구팬들의 응원 레퍼토리에는 끝이 없습니다.

영국 축구팬들은 매우 독특합니다. 영국에서 축구 경기 자체는 팬 문화의 부수적인 한 부분에 불과하다고 말할 수 있을 정도입니다. 영국 축구팬들은 다른 어느 나라의 서포터들보다 팬이라는 정체성이 강합니다. 그들은 자신들의 조직 규모나 인지도, 남들과 구별되는 자신들만의 색깔에 많은 관심을 기울입니다.

영국 축구팬들이 가장 높이 떠받드는 가치는 (자신들이 응원하는 팀에 대한) 헌신적인 애정입니다. 축구에서 그 밖의 다른 것들은 거의 안중에 없습니다. 예를 들어, 풀햄(Fullhan) 구단의 팬은 드록바(Drogba)나 루니(Rooney) 같은 스타 선수들에 관한 기사에도 물론 관심을 두겠지만, 정작 원하는 기사는 자신이 응원하는 풀햄에 관한 내용들입니다. 네덜란드나 독일에 살고 있는 제 친구들도 선호하는 구단들이 몇 개 있기는 했지만, 단순히 좋아하는 수준이었고, 그나마 자주 바뀌는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 제가 잉글랜드에 와서 놀란 점은 본인 스스로는 공을 찰 의사조차도 전혀 없는 사람들이 성적이 형편없는 팀을 열렬히 응원하고 매주 경기를 관전한다는 사실이었습니다.

영국 축구팬들은 축구사에도 정통합니다. 어느 두 구단이 맞붙을라치면, 두 구단의 역사도 함께 맞붙게 됩니다. 글래스고의 경우에는 특히 더 그렇습니다. 셀틱(Celtic) 응원가 가사에는 이러한 전통이 직설적으로 표현되어 있습니다. 

“싸울 가치가 있는 위대한 전통의 팀,
바라볼 가치가 있는 위대한 전통의 팀,
너의 역사를 알고 있다면
너의 심장을 뛰게 하리라. 뛰어. 뛰어. 뛰어.”

잉글랜드의 유명한 축구해설가인 존 못슨(John Motson)은 다음과 같은 해설을 통해 영국 축구의 전통을 단적으로 보여준 적이 있습니다. “이 두 팀이 컵 대회에서 마지막으로 대결한 것은 1954년입니다. 당시 로버스(Rovers)가 전반 31분에 터진 상대 자살골을 끝까지 잘 지켜 1:0으로 승리한 바 있습니다.”

British Fans Are Different

British football, so they say, is in decline. Out-played, out-thought - it's club teams full of foreigners. But lift your eyes from the pitch to the stands, and you'll see a group of people who are copied worldwide - Britain's devoted fans. Simon Kuper explains.

The most devoted foreign fans admire British fan culture. Some of the foreigners try to imitate the British, which explains the Union Jacks on terraces all over Europe and the songs borrowed from Britain. 'Here We Go', which Auberon Waugh called the national anthem of the working classes, is rapidly becoming the new Internationale. The British fan's repertoire is limitless.

British fans are unique. In Britain, football itself is almost incidental to fan culture. More than any other supporters in the world, British fans are aware of themselves as fans. They think a lot about their own numbers, their visibility, and their group character.

The British fan's main virtue is devotion (to his or her team). Nothing else in football matters nearly as much to him. A Fulham fan wants to read about Drogba and Rooney, but most of all he or she wants to read about Fulham. My friends in Holland and Germany liked some teams more than others, but these sympathies were slight and changeable. Coming to England, I met people who had not the slightest desire to kick a ball themselves but who were devoted to teams which they knew to play poor football and which they went to see play every week.

British fans are historians. When two British sides play each other, their histories play each other too. This is especially true in Glasgow. The Celtic anthem sums it up:

'It's a grand old team to play for,
It's a grand old team to see,
And if you know your history,
It's enough to make your heart go oh oh oh oh'

When John Motson, the famous English TV football commentator tells us that 'these two sides last met in the Cup in I954, Rovers winning 1-0 thanks to a 31st minute own goal', he is making a very British point.'
