IELTS Tips – Writing – Academic Module – Task 1 – Describing a Diagram

Here are some tips for writing the diagram in the Academic Module:

l      Make sure you write at least 150 words.

l      Spend about 20 minutes on this task.

l      Remember, you have to describe what you can see, not why. And to get a good score for the Task Achievement criteria, you need to summarise and select, not just describe.

l      Therefore, it is usually necessary to describe the overall significance of the diagram (which is not always specified). For example, a graph might show separate figures for 4 age groups going to the cinema. You will need to process the data in some way e.g. ‘From this diagram, it is apparent that younger people go to the cinema more than older people and that the attendance figures for all groups have risen over the specified period’. It is up to you to summarise in this way – it will not be done for you - so remember to supply the big picture as well as the detail.

l      You then need to choose the most important pieces of data, usually numbers, amounts, years etc. For the example above, you may wish to give data for the first and last year of the period for each group, the data for any year where there is a notable change in the general trend and any years where one group passes another.
