주한영국문화원 선생님의 IELTS Tip 11 - Writing

IELTS Tips – Writing– General Module – Task 1 - The Letter

Here are some tips for writing the letter in the General Module:

l      Make sure you write at least 150 words.

l      Spend about 20 minutes on this task.

l      Make sure you understand the question and the 3 bullet points given.

l      You must address the 3 bullet points in the letter – if you miss even one, your score will go down. You should also use your imagination to give as much detail as you can – do not just deal with each point in one line.

l      It usually tells you how to begin e.g. ‘Dear Sir/Madame,’ (Dear Sir / Dear Madame) and not one of your own – if so, do use this opening.

l      Please note that if you begin with ‘Dear Sir/Madame’, it’s normally best to finish with ‘Yours faithfully’. If you use the name at the beginning e.g. ‘Dear Mr. Smith’, it’s usually best to finish with ‘Yours sincerely’. If you are writing to a friend e.g. ‘Dear Bob’, a more informal ending would be best e.g. ‘Best wishes’, ‘See you next year’, ‘Take Care!’ etc.

l      Be carefully not to use irrelevant chunks of language e.g. ‘If you have any problems, please do not hesitate to contact me on 012-345-6789’ – this is not suitable for a letter to a friend!
