잉글랜드 축구 시스템이 어렵다구요?

잉글랜드 축구의 체계에 익숙하지 않은 외부의 축구팬들에게 잉글랜드 리그는 마치 미로처럼 복잡하게만 느껴질 수 있습니다. 프리미어리그와 챔피언쉽의 차이점이나 컨퍼런스와 FA컵의 차이를 구분하지 못하는 팬들을 위해 간단한 길잡이를 제공하고자 합니다.

잉글랜드의 축구 리그들 간에는 서열이 존재합니다. 각각의 리그에 소속된 팀들은 성적에 따라 상위 리그로 승격될 수도 있고 하위 리그로 강등될 수도 있습니다.

최고의 명예와 보상이 주어지기에 팀들 간에 치열한 경쟁이 벌어지는 프리미어리그(Premier League)는 리그들 중에서 가장 높은 자리를 차지하고 있습니다. 줄여서 프리미어쉽(Premiership)이라고도 불리는 프리미어리그는 잉글랜드 최고 명문구단 20개 팀으로 구성됩니다. 매 시즌 강력한 우승후보로 거론되는 구단들에는 맨체스터 유나이티드와 아스날 그리고 첼시가 있습니다. 또한 프리미어리그는 세계에서 가장 부유한 리그이기도 합니다. 프리미어 리그와 경쟁적 입장인 이탈리아 리그와 비교해도 40% 가량 더 많은 수입을 올리는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

자타가 인정하는 영원한 우승후보들인 맨체스터 유나이티드나 아스날 역시 이론적으로는 언제라도 하위 리그인 챔피언쉽(Championship)으로 강등될 가능성이 있습니다. 챔피언십은 잉글랜드 리그 시스템에서 2부 리그를 의미하며, 높은 수익을 보장하는 프리미어리그로의 승격을 노리는 24개 팀들로 이루어집니다. 챔피언쉽 아래에는 리그 원(League One)과 리그 투(League Two)가 있습니다. 잉글랜드 리그는 수십 년 동안 동일한 구조를 유지하고 있었지만 1992년 당시 최고 명문구단들이 기존의 풋볼리그(Football League)에서 탈퇴하고 프리미어리그를 새롭게 창설하면서 현재의 형태를 갖추게 되었습니다.

리그 투 아래에는 ‘비(非) 리그 축구’로 통칭되는 수많은 팀들이 컨퍼런스(Conference)에서 경쟁하고 있습니다. 컨퍼런스에 속하는 팀들은 리그 투로의 승격을 고대하며 언젠가는 최고의 무대인 프리미어리그에서 경기하는 날이 오기만을 손꼽아 기다리고 있습니다. 또한 컨퍼런스 밑에는 다양한 형태의 지역 리그들이 존재합니다. 그러므로 구조적으로 이론상으로는 어떠한 지역 클럽이든지 승격에 승격을 거듭하여 프리미어리그에까지 오를 수 있습니다. 하지만 자금력의 막강한 영향력이라는 현실을 감안할 때 그러한 희망은 거의 불가능에 가깝습니다.

비록 프리미어리그가 일약 대성공을 거두며 잉글랜드 최고의 인기를 구가하는 경쟁 스포츠로 자리잡기는 했지만, 인기와 권위 면에서 전통적으로 FA컵(FA Cup) 역시 결코 그에 뒤지지 않습니다.

FA컵은 토너먼트 방식을 채택하고 있습니다. 그러므로 한 경기라도 패한다면 내년 대회를 기약할 수 밖에 없습니다. 전통적으로 최종 우승팀은 마지막까지 전승을 기록한 두 팀이 웸블리 스타디움(Wembley Stadium)에서 결승전을 치르는 방식으로 결정되어 왔습니다. 하지만 2001년부터 2006년까지는 웸블리 스타디움의 공사로 웨일즈 카디프의 밀레니엄 스타디움(Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)에서 결승전을 치를 수 밖에 없었습니다. 2007년 새 웸블리 구장이 개장되면서 웸블리에서 결승전을 개최하는 전통이 다시 부활하였습니다.

잉글랜드 내 모든 클럽은 예선을 거쳐 본선 진출권을 따야 합니다. 다만, 챔피언쉽과 프리미어리그에 소속된 유명 클럽들은 자동적으로 예선전을 면제받으므로 3라운드에서 비리그 팀들과 경기하는 경우도 종종 벌어지게 됩니다. 잉글랜드 축구사에서 오래도록 기억되곤 하는 경이로운 사건들은 바로 이런 상황에서 일어나곤 합니다. 비리그 클럽이 놀라운 투지를 발휘하여 명문 부자 구단들, 심지어 프리미어리그 팀을 상대로 ‘거인을 쓰러뜨리는’ 대이변을 연출하는 것입니다.

다소 혼동을 일으키는 명칭인 리그컵(League Cup)은 잉글랜드에서 개최되는 또 다른 토너먼트 대회의 이름이지만 명문 구단들은 대회 초반부에는 별다른 관심이나 가치를 부여하지 않는 것이 보통입니다. 그래서 맨체스터 유나이티드나 아스날 같은 구단들은 준준결승이나  준결승에 가서야 주전 선수들을 기용하는 경우도 종종 볼 수 있습니다.

For the foreign fan of English football the structure of the game in England can resemble a labyrinth. So for those of you who don’t know their Barclays Premier League from their Championship, or their Conference from their FA Cup, here is a quick guide.

The English league system consists of a hierarchy of leagues, with teams able to earn promotion to higher leagues or be relegated to lower leagues depending on their level of success.

At the top of the English game, the toughest competition to win and carrying the greatest prestige and reward is the Barclays Premier League. Sometimes called simply the Premiership, the Premier League consists of the 20 top teams in England. Big names battling for the Premier League title each year include Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. The Barclays Premier League is the richest football league in the world, with enormous club revenues believed to be 40 per cent higher than the nearest competitor, the Italian top league.

While Manchester United and Chelsea are perennial title contenders, in theory no team is beyond being relegated from the Premier League to the Championship. The Championship is the second tier of the English league system and is made up of 24 teams, fighting to earn promotion to the lucrative Premier League. Below the Championship is League One and then League Two. While the structure of the English league remained the same for many years it was shaken up in 1992 when the top clubs broke away from the old Football League to form the Premier League.

Below League Two there are a huge number of other competitions, collectively known as ‘non-League football’. Teams in the Conference battle to earn a place in League Two, dreaming of one day rising to the very top and playing in the Premier League. Below the Conference is a mix of more local competitions. The structure is such that, in theory at least, any local club could rise and rise until it reached the Premier League, although the huge influence money has on the game makes this next to impossible in practice.

Although the massive success of the Premier League has made it the number one sporting competition in England, traditionally the top league has been rivalled in popularity and prestige by English football’s top cup competition, the FA Cup.

The FA Cup uses a knockout format. Lose one game and you sit out the competition until the following year. The winner is decided when the last two remaining unbeaten teams play in the final, traditionally held at Wembley Stadium. The tradition was suspended from 2001 to 2006 due to the reconstruction of Wembley, and returned when the new Wembley was eventually opened in 2007.

Teams across England compete in tournaments to qualify for the competition, while the higher-level league clubs gain automatic entry. Clubs in the Championship and the Premier League enter in the third round of the Cup, where some inevitably face non-league opposition. It is here that some of the most surprising and memorable feats in English football occur, with non-league clubs rising to the challenge and performing ‘giant-killing’ acts by defeating famous and wealthy league clubs, sometimes even from the Premier League itself.

The somewhat confusingly named League Cup is English football’s other major knockout competition but one which is not taken as seriously or as highly-prized by the major clubs at least until its later stages. Clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal often field second-string teams until the quarter or semi-finals.
