포츠머스 클럽
오는 8월 10일 일요일 EPL 챔피언 맨체스터 유나이티드와 FA컵 우승팀 포츠머스가 웸블리 스타디움에서 격돌하는 FA 커뮤니티실드 경기를 시작으로 잉글랜드 축구 시즌이 다시 한번 막을 올립니다. 이 경기는 포츠머스로서는 오랫동안 고대해온 영광을 재현하는 계기인 동시에 폼피(Pompey) 팬들이 거대한 무대에서 그 유명한 클럽 응원가를 목청껏 부를 수 있는 기회이기도 합니다.

전통
포츠머스 클럽은 지금까지도 구단의 홈구장으로 사용되고 있는 프래튼 파크(Fratton Park)를 연고지로 1898년 4월 5일에 창설됐습니다. 프래튼 파크와 연고 도시인 포츠머스시는 잉글랜드 남부 해안의 섬 위에 자리잡고 있는 까닭에 잉글랜드 4개 리그를 통틀어 유일하게 영국 본토에서 떨어진 지역에 건설된 경기장이라는 독특한 특징을 지니고 있습니다.
과거 클럽의 전성기에는 구단 역사상 최대 규모인 51,385명의 관람객이 입장한 기록도 남아 있습니다. 하지만 오늘날 프래튼 파크는 2만 명을 약간 넘는 관람객을 수용할 수 있으며 이는 EPL에서 가장 작은 규모입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 잉글랜드 축구의 황금기부터 전해져 내려오는 고유한 전통들을 현재까지도 계승하고 있습니다.

The English football season kicks off once more with the F.A. Community Shield match on Sunday at Wembley Stadium between the EPL champions, Manchester United, and the FA Cup winners, Portsmouth. For Portsmouth, this is a long-delayed return to the big time and an opportunity for the Pompey fans to sing their famous anthem once again on the biggest stage.
Traditions
Portsmouth Football Club was created on April 5th, 1898, playing its games at Fratton Park, where the club still plays today. The ground has the unique distinction of being the only stadium in the four divisions of the league that is off the British mainland, as the ground and the city are situated on an island off the south coast of England.
In the club’s heyday, 51,385 squeezed in to create a club record attendance. Today, however, Fratton Park holds a little over 20 000, the lowest in the EPL, but retains the traditions of the club and of football’s golden age.
The club is nicknamed Pompey, as is the city, and the club’s fans are considered to be amongst the most passionate and vociferous in English football. In recognition of their role as the club’s ‘twelfth man’, the fans at ‘Fortress Fratton’ have been awarded the club’s number twelve shirt, which will never be worn by the club’s players.
One tradition that has been forever associated with the club has been the song sung by its supporters as the game nears its end, the Pompey Chimes. The song was originally sung by fans of the successful military team, the Royal Artillery, which was based in the naval city and was created to accompany the chimes of the nearby Guildhall clock. The fans urge the players to finish the game strongly before they go home, singing,
“Play up Pompey,
Just one more goal,
Make tracks! What ho!
Hallo! Hallo!”
Early days and glory days
The club began life in the Southern League in 1899 and eventually joined the Football League in 1920 by entering the Third Division South and reached the top tier in 1927. The club struggled to survive in the First Division but had its first taste of FA Cup success, reaching the final in 1928, 1934 and 1939, losing to Bolton Wanderers, then Manchester City before finally winning the trophy at the third attempt when they defeated Wolves 4-1.
When football resumed after the Second World War in 1946 Portsmouth had what was believed to be the best team in the land and they defeated all-comers on a mighty charge for glory. It all went perfectly until they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup when they were defeated by Leicester City but Pompey ended the season as League Champions for the very first time. The club then repeated the feat the following season, achieving the rare distinction of winning back-to-back league titles.
Money matters
The club’s fortunes declined through the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and the club struggled to survive and often barely avoided bankruptcy, frequently selling its players as it languished in the lower divisions. The club returned to the limelight briefly in 1992 when it narrowly lost an epic FA Cup semi-final on penalties to Liverpool and then lost out on promotion by a single goal.
Financial crises returned throughout the nineties, with the club being sold for one pound and then finally going into financial administration in December 1998. Milan Mandaric bought the club in May 1999 and invested some of his millions to ensure survival, financially and in a football sense, as the club narrowly avoided relegation. Harry Redknapp became manager in early 2002 and immediately weaved his magic, as the club returned to the top tier in 2003. The club consolidated its position, while Redknapp left and then returned, before a new owner, multi-millionaire Alexandre Gaydamak, took over in January 2006 and invested heavily.
The investment paid off as Pompey finished just short of European qualification in 9th place in 2007 and then finished 8th and won the FA Cup last season by beating Cardiff City 1-0 to claim its first trophy for over fifty years, qualifying for the UEFA Cup and its first ever season in European competition.
