축구선수의 등번호의 의미

잉글랜드에서 태어나 공을 차며 어린 시절을 보낸 필자는 축구에 관한 한 몇 가지 사실들만큼은 조금도 의심해본 적이 없습니다. 즉 골키퍼의 등번호는 1번이고 오른쪽과 왼쪽 측면 수비수는 각각 2번과 3번이며 중앙 미드필더는 5번 그리고 최전방 공격수는 9번이라는 원칙이 그것입니다. 물론 그 당시조차도 나머지 등번호들은 팀 내에 측면 미드필더를 두느냐의 여부 등에 따라 약간 복잡하게 정해진 것이 사실이지만 한 가지만은 분명했습니다. 선수들의 등번호는 언제나 1번부터 11번까지가 전부였습니다. 그 이후로 참으로 많은 변화가 있었습니다.

전통주의자

오늘날에도 프리미어리그에는 여전히 전통주의자들이 남아 있습니다. 첼시의 골키퍼인 페트르 체흐(Petr Cech)와 맨체스터유나이티드의 골기퍼인 에드윈 반 데 사르(Edwin van der Sar)는 등번호 1번을 달고 있으며, 아스턴빌라의 오른쪽 측면 수비수 루크 영(Luke Young)은 2번, 맨체스터유나이티드의 왼쪽 측면 수비수 파트리스 에브라(Patrice Evra)는 3번을 고수하고 있습니다. 맨유의 리오 퍼디난드(Rio Ferdinand)는 중앙 미드필더를 가리키는 5번을 선택했으며, 첼시의 중앙 미드필더 히카르도 카르발류(Ricardo Carvalho)는 6번을 달고 경기에 나섭니다.

맨유의 오언 하그리브스(Owen Hargreaves)는 수비형 미드필더를 뜻하는 4번을 달고 시합에 임하며 과거에 그의 팀 동료였던 크리스티아누 호날두(Christiano Ronaldo)는 오른쪽 측면 공격수의 등번호 7번을, 라이언 긱스(Ryan Giggs)는 전통적인 11번을 달았습니다.

리버풀의 스티븐 제라드(Steven Gerrard)와 첼시의 프랭크 램퍼드(Frank Lampard)는 모두 공격형 미드필더를 의미하는 8번을 선택했으며, 리버풀의 페르난도 토레스(Fernando Torres)와 맨유의 디미타르 베르바토프(Dimitar Berbatov)는 최전방 공격수를 가리키는 고유 번호인 9번을 달고 있습니다. 맨유의 웨인 루니(Wayne Rooney)나 첼시의 조 콜(Joe Cole) 혹은 맨체스터시티의 호비뉴(Robinho)는 전통적으로 섀도우 스트라이커를 의미하는 10번을 배정받은 대표적인 예입니다. 

파격

선수들 중에는 1번부터 11번까지의 전통적인 등번호를 달았지만 엉뚱한 포지션을 맡는 경우도 있습니다. 현재 프리미어리그 골키퍼 중에는 2번에서 11번 사이의 등번호를 달고 뛰는 선수가 없으므로 그러한 파격의 예를 찾을 수 없습니다만 다른 포지션들은 그런 선수들만으로도 얼마든지 한 팀을 꾸릴 수 있습니다.

오른쪽과 왼쪽 측면 수비수에는 각각 아스날의 3번 바카리 사냐(Bacary Sagna)와 포츠머스의 7번 헤르만 흐레이다르손(Hermann Hreidarsson)을 세울수 있겠고 중앙 수비수 두 자리는 아스날의 10번 윌리엄 갈라스(Willian Gallas)와 포츠머스의 3번 유네스 카불(Younes Kaboul)로 채울 수 있을 것입니다. 

미드필더에는 둘 다 5번인 첼시의 마이클 에시앙(Michael Essien)과 스퍼스의 데이빗 벤틀리(David Bentley)를 세우고 역시 둘 다 8번인 맨시티의 션 라이트-필립스(Shaun Wright-Phillips)와 아스날의 사미르 나스리(Samir Nasri)를 우측과 좌측에 포진시킬 수 있습니다. 최전방에는 등번호 11번인 첼시의 디디어 드록바(Didier Drogba)와 맨유의 7번 마이클 오언(Michael Owen)을 배치할 수 있습니다. 

높이, 더 높이

어떤 선수들은 1번부터 11번까지의 등번호에 얽매이는 것을 거부하고 더 높은 번호를 선택하기도 합니다. 리버풀의 골키퍼인 페페 레이나(Pepe Reina)는 25번을 고집하며 지역 라이벌 에버튼의 골키퍼인 팀 하워드(Tim Howard)는 24번 등번호를 달았습니다. 첼시의 오른쪽 측면 수비수 조제 보싱와(Jose Bosingwa)는 17번을 선호하며 아스날의 왼쪽 측면 수비수 가엘 클리쉬(Gael Clichy)는 22번을 선택했습니다. 

중앙 수비수 자리에는 첼시의 26번 존 테리(John Terry)나 스퍼스의 39번 조나단 우드게이트(Jonathan Woodgate) 혹은 맨유의 15번 네마냐 비디치(Nemanja Vidic)를 선택할 수 있습니다. 아니면 소속팀인 리버풀과 포츠머스에서 같은 등번호인 23번을 달고 뛰는 제이미 캐러거(Jamie Carragher)와 케빈-프린스 보아텡(Kevin-Prince Boateng)을 고를 수도 있습니다.  

미드필더로는 첼시의 13번 미하일 발락(Michael Ballack)이나 맨유의 16번 마이클 캐릭(Michael Carrick)을 포진시킬 수 있습니다. 아니면 20번인 첼시의 데코(Deco)와 리버풀의 하비에르 마스체라노(Javier Mascherano)를 선호할 수도 있습니다. 

측면 오른쪽에는 아스날의 14번 테오 월콧(Theo Walcott)을, 왼쪽에는 첼시의 15번 플로렝 말루다(Florian Malouda)를 선택할 수 있습니다. 최전방에는 위건의 20번 우고 로다예가(Hugo Rodallega)나 맨시티의 32번 카를로스 테베즈(Carlos Tevez) 혹은 첼시의 39번 니콜라스 아넬카(Nicolas Anelka)를 내세울 수 있습니다.  

이처럼 등번호가 갈수록 높아지면서 선택의 폭도 계속해서 넓어지고 있습니다. 포르투갈 클럽인 FC포르토에서 여러 번 99번을 달았던 비토르 바이아(Vitor Baia)보다 높은 번호를 가진 선수나 스코틀랜드 프리미어리그에서 0번을 선택했던 애버딘의 히참 제루알리(Hicham Zerouali)보다 낮은 번호를 가진 선수는 아직까지 프리미어리그에 없습니다만 언젠가는 그런 날이 올지도 모릅니다.

As a child growing up playing football in England, I was sure of a few things; the goalkeeper wore the number one shirt, the right back and left-back wore numbers two and three, the centre-half wore number five and the centre-forward wore number nine. Even then things got a little complicated with the other numbers depending on whether or not the team had wingers, but of one thing I was certain, the players always wore numbers one to eleven. How things have changed …

Traditionalists

In today’s Barclays Premier League there are still some traditionalists. Petr Cech at Chelsea and Edwin van der Sar at Manchester United both wear the goalkeeper’s number one shirt, while Luke Young dons the right-back’s number two shirt at Aston Villa and Patrice Evra uses the left-back’s number three shirt at Man United. Rio Ferdinand chooses the centre-half’s number five shirt for the Red Devils while the centre-half Ricardo Carvalho at Chelsea possesses the number six shirt for Chelsea.

Owen Hargreaves plays in the traditional number four shirt of the defensive midfielder for Man U, while at the same club Christiano Ronaldo was seen in the conventional right-winger’s number seven and Ryan Giggs is given the traditional number eleven shirt.

Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and Frank Lampard of Chelsea are both handed the traditional number eight shirt expected of attacking midfielders and Fernando Torres of Liverpool and Dimitar Berbatov of Man U are typical centre-forwards wearing the famous number nine. Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney at Man U, Joe Cole at Chelsea and Robinho at Manchester City are good examples of the support striker that are traditionally offered the number ten shirt.

Unconventional

Others still wear the traditional shirts numbered from one to eleven but just not in the right places. An unconventional eleven would not include a goalkeeper as none of the current keepers in the Barclays Premier League wear shirts numbered from two to eleven but the other positions can be filled by unconventional players.

At right-back would be Arsenal’s number three, Bacary Sagna, and at left-back would be Portsmouth’s number seven, Hermann Hreidarsson, while the two centre-back spots would be filled by Arsenal’s number ten, Willian Gallas and Portsmouth’s number three, Younes Kaboul.

In midfield would be two number fives, Chelsea’s Michael Essien, and David Bentley of Spurs, while two number eights would appear on the wings, with Man City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips on the right and Arsenal’s Samir Nasri on the left. And in attack, you could have Chelsea’s Didier Drogba in the number eleven shirt plus the Manchester United number seven, Michael Owen.

Higher and higher

Some players reject the shirts numbered one to eleven and select something higher. Liverpool keeper, Pepe Reina, wears number twenty-five while his counterpart across the city, Tim Howard at Everton, wears twenty-four. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s right-back, Jose Bosingwa, prefers the number seventeen and Arsenal’s left-back, Gael Clichy, opts for the number twenty-two shirt.

In the heart of the defence you could choose Chelsea’s John Terry in the number twenty-six shirt, Jonathan Woodgate in the number thirty-nine shirt for Spurs, or Nemanja Vidic in the number fifteen shirt for Man U. Or you could choose two number twenty-threes, Jamie Carragher and Kevin-Prince Boateng, who each wear that shirt for their clubs, Liverpool and Portsmouth respectively. 

Your midfield could include Chelsea’s number thirteen, Michael Ballack, or Man U’s number sixteen, Michael Carrick. Or you may prefer a couple of number twenties, Deco of Chelsea and Javier Mascherano of Liverpool.

On the wings you could choose Arsenal’s number fourteen, Theo Walcott, on the right and Chelsea’s number fifteen, Florian Malouda, on the left. And up front, you could have Wigan’s number twenty, Hugo Rodallega, Man City’s number thirty-two, Carlos Tevez, or Chelsea’s number thirty-nine, Nicolas Anelka.

So, the choice of numbers continues to grow as the numbers get higher and higher. Nobody in the Barclays Premier League has gone as high as Vitor Baia, who wore number ninety-nine for Portuguese club FC Porto many times, or as low as Aberdeen’s Hicham Zerouali who wore zero in the Scottish Premier League, but one day it may happen.
