판타지 풋볼―실제보다 낫다고요?!

여러분은 경기를 관전하다가 문득 이런 생각들을 해본 적은 없나요? ‘도대체 저 선수는 왜 영입한 거야? 아무 짝에도 쓸모가 없다고!’라든지 ‘그 스트라이커는 팔지 말아야 했어’라든지 ‘보다 창조적인 미드필더가 필요해’ 같은 생각들 말입니다. 누구나 이런 생각들을―보통은 자기가 좋아하는 팀에 대해―품고 있기 마련입니다. 하지만 실제로는 오직 한 사람, 감독만이 그런 결정을 내리게 되지요. 정말 그럴까요? 현실 세계에서라면 그럴 수도 있겠지만 판타지 풋볼의 세계에서라면 누구나 세계 최정상 팀의 감독이 될 수 있습니다. 그리고 그것이 얼마나 힘든 일인지 직접 경험해볼 수 있답니다!

판타지 풋볼은 15년 전 영국에서 최초로 고안됐습니다. 처음에는 신문의 한 코너로 출발하여 축구계와 연예계 유명 인사들이 초청 게스트로 참가해서 바클레이스 프리미어리그 혹은 당시 명칭인 디비전 원에서 뛰는 선수들로 가상의 팀을 구성하는 라디오 프로그램으로 발전했습니다. 게스트들은 매주 스튜디오에 나와 판타지 팀 리그 기록표에서 자신이 선택한 선수들의 성적을 확인합니다. 이 프로가 선풍적인 인기를 끌면서 곧이어 잉글랜드에서는 TV 쇼가 제작됐고, 얼마 지나지 않아 비단 유명인들뿐만 아니라 신문과 인터넷을 통해 누구나 대회에 참여할 수 있게 되었습니다. 오늘날에는 수백 개에 이르는 판타지 풋볼 대회가 운영되고 있으며, 판타지 크리켓, 농구, 포뮬러원, 미식축구 등 다른 수많은 스포츠 종목으로도 그 개념이 확대됐습니다.

게임의 원리는 단순합니다. 게임마다 저마다 조금씩 다른 규칙을 적용하고는 있지만 기본적으로 현재 리그에 참가 중인 선수 전원을 대상으로 자신의 팀을 구성하는 것이 골자입니다. 예를 들어, 공격수 2명, 미드필더 4명, 수비수 4명, 골키퍼 1명을 선택할 수 있습니다. 한 팀에서 고를 수 있는 선수의 숫자나 지불할 수 있는 금액에 한도가 정해지는 경우도 종종 있습니다. 이것은 너나 할 것 없이 첼시나 아스날 같은 팀 전체(!)를 선택하는 부작용을 방지하기 위함입니다. 매주 실제 리그에서 자신이 선발한 선수들이 기록한 성적을 토대로 팀 점수가 매겨집니다. 예를 들자면, 만약 웨인 루니와 디디에 드록바를 공격수로 지명했는데 두 사람 모두 해트트릭을 기록했다면 굉장히 높은 점수를 얻게 됩니다. 마찬가지로, 수비수와 골키퍼 역시 실점을 하지 않았다면 점수가 부여됩니다. 매주 자신의 판타지 팀이 획득한 점수가 합산되고 다른 판타지 팀들과 같이 소속된 판타지 리그 안에서 순위가 결정됩니다. 대부분의 게임에서 참가자는 팀의 성공 확률을 높이기 위해 시즌 중에도 선수를 사고 팔 수 있습니다.

이 게임에서 가장 재미있는 부분 중 하나는 친구나 직장 동료 혹은 동급생들을 상대로 누가 더 뛰어난 감독인지 겨뤄볼 수 있다는 점입니다. 인터넷상에서라면 다른 나라 팀들을 상대로도 경쟁을 펼칠 수 있습니다. 몇몇 판타지 풋볼 게임에서는 어마어마한 상품을 내거는 경우도 있으며 말 그대로 수천 개의 게임 전문 사이트와 관련 토론 사이트가 운영되고 있습니다. 이 게임을 심각하게 생각하는 사람들이 분명히 있는 모양입니다! 일례로, 어느 온라인 게임 업체는 그 시즌의 최우수 감독에게 상금으로 5만 파운드를 제시했습니다. 하지만 우리들 대부분은 시즌이 끝났을 때 친구나 동료보다 나은 성적을 올리는 게 여전히 최선의 목표겠지요!

다만, 판타지 풋볼 팀의 감독을 겸하고 있는 진짜 축구 팬에게 닥치게 될 고민이 눈에 선하군요. 토요일 저녁 프리미어리그를 관전하다가 상대 팀을 열렬히 응원하는 자신의 모습을 상상할 수 있나요? 물론 아니겠죠! 어떻게 그런 일이 일어날 수 있냐고요? 상대 팀의 스타 플레이어가 당신의 판타지 풋볼 팀 소속이라면 얼마든지 가능합니다! 그런 선수는 결코 쓰지 않을 것이라고 생각할지 모르지만 알렉스 퍼거슨 감독이라도 기회만 된다면 틀림없이 스티븐 제라드를 영입할 겁니다! 그렇다면 여러분은 어느 쪽을 응원하겠습니까? 현실 세계에서 자신이 좋아하는 팀인가요 아니면 자신이 직접 뽑은 판타지 팀인가요? 필자의 경우에는 현실 세계의 팀을 가까스로 응원하고 있다고 생각합니다. 하지만 아슬아슬했던 적도 몇 번 있었답니다! 그래서 미리 경고합니다. 판타지 풋볼을 할 때는 조심하세요. 여러분의 삶을 바꾸어 놓을 수도 있으니까요!

Fantasy Football – better than the real thing?!

Have you ever been watching a game and thought - ‘Why on earth did they sign him, he’s useless!’ or maybe, ‘They should never have sold that striker’ or even, ‘They need a more creative midfielder’? These are thoughts we all have – usually about our favourite teams – but the truth is that only one man gets to make those decisions: the manager. Or is it? In the real world, maybe so, but in the world of Fantasy Football, we can all be the manager of a top football team – and find out how hard it really is!

Fantasy Football was dreamed up over fifteen years ago in Britain. It started in newspapers and then became a radio programme in which celebrities from the football and entertainment worlds were invited to select a team of players from Barclays Premier League – or Division One – as it was then called. Every week, the guests would come into the studio and find out how their players had performed that week, in a league table of the fantasy teams. It was so popular that it quickly became a TV show in England, and soon it was not just celebrities who were involved; everyone could play – with competitions run in newspapers and on the Internet. Today there are hundreds of different Fantasy Football competitions, and the concept has been applied to a whole range of other sports – Fantasy Cricket, Basketball, Formula One, and American Football to name a few.

The idea behind the game is simple. Although different games have different rules, the basic idea is to choose your own team from all the players available in the league. So you would pick two strikers, four midfielders, four defenders and a goalkeeper, for example. Often, limits are placed on the number of players you can have from each real football team, or on the amount of money you can spend to build your team – this is to stop everybody choosing the entire Chelsea or Arsenal team! Your team scores points based on how all your players perform in the real world every weekend. For instance, if you have Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba as your strikers and they both score hat-tricks, you’ll get a whole load of points. Similarly, defenders and goalkeepers can earn points by keeping a clean sheet. Every week your fantasy team’s points are added up and you will move up or down the fantasy league made up of other fantasy teams. In most games you can buy and sell players throughout the season to improve your team’s chances of success.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the game is the fact that you can play against your friends and workmates or schoolmates to see who the best manager is. On the Internet, you can also play against teams from different countries. In some fantasy football games there are some huge prizes to be won, and literally thousands of websites dedicated to the games and to talking about them – obviously some people take this very seriously! One on-line game, for example, offered a prize of £50,000 to the best manager over the season. Still, for most of us the best we can hope for is to finish above our friends and colleagues at the end of the season!

However, the drawbacks for true football fans who manage a fantasy football team are obvious. Can you imagine yourself cheering for the opposing team against your favourite team when watching the Barclays Premier League on a Saturday night? Surely not! How could this happen? Easily enough when the opposing team’s star player is also in your fantasy football team! You may think you shouldn’t have those players in your team, but I’m sure even Alex Ferguson would sign Steven Gerrard if he had the chance! So where do your loyalties lie? With your real world favourites, or with your own creation – the fantasy eleven?  For me, I think I’m just about managing to stay faithful to my real team, but it’s been close a few times! So a word of warning – be careful with Fantasy Football, it can change your life!
