주한영국문화원 선생님의 IELTS Tip 8 - Speaking

Part 1. Responses

The speaking section of the test begins with 4-5 minutes of quite short questions on general topics. You should try to answer these naturally:

  • Length of response - the examiner does not always expect a long answer. For Yes/No questions (e.g. Do you like studying?) a short answer is fine as the examiner will then usually ask Why? and you can then give a longer response.

  • Echoing – try not to repeat the examiners question too much e.g. (Examiner) What’s your favourite sport? (Candidate) My favourite sport is .... etc. In this case you could say I really like football .... or even just football.

  • Didn’t understand the examiner? – if you don’t understand what the examiner said, you can ask him/her to repeat the question. Even better, if you think you understood but are not sure, try paraphrasing e.g. (Examiner) How do you keep fit? (Candidate) Do you mean what physical exercise I do? (Examiner) Yes, that’s right. It’s better to check than to give an irrelevant answer.

  • Unknown word - If you really don’t understand an important word, you can ask the examiner to explain it, but try to do so in an accurate, precise way e.g. (Candidate) I’m afraid I’m not sure what ‘fit’ means exactly ...?
