세인츠와 히슨스 - 맨체스터 더비

1881년 11월 12일 웨스트고튼(세인트막스)이 뉴튼히스를 홈으로 불러 들여 가진 친선 경기에서 원정팀인 뉴튼히스가 3-0 승리를 거두면서 두 팀 간의 라이벌 의식이 시작됐습니다. 1894년 11월 풋볼리그에서 두 클럽은 다시 만나게 되었고, 하이드로드 구장에서 벌어진 이 시합에서 뉴튼히스가 5-2로 또다시 승리를 거뒀습니다. 세인츠(세인트막스)는 바로 맨체스터시티의 전신이며. 히슨스(뉴튼히스)는 맨체스터유나이티드의 예전 명칭입니다.

이 양 팀 간의 경기는 오늘날 맨체스터더비로 불리며 과거로부터의 라이벌 구도가 현재도 여전히 지속되고 있습니다. 맨체스터유나이티드는 세계 최고의 명문 클럽이라는 자부심을 갖고 있으며, 최근 재정이 확대된 맨체스터시티는 스스로를 세계 제일의 부자 구단이라고 자부하고 있습니다.

어느 팀이 더 우세할까?

유나이티드 팬들은 맨체스터더비 성적에서 자신들이 우위를 점하고 있다는 사실을 서둘러 지적하겠지만 실상 그렇게까지 압도적인 우위는 아닙니다. 리그 전적에서 맨체스터유나이티드는 홈에서 31승, 어웨이에서 25승을 거뒀고 맨체스터시티는 홈에서 22승, 어웨이에서 15승을 챙겼습니다. 무승부는 48차례였습니다.

두 클럽은 FA컵에서도 6번 격돌해서 레드데빌(*편집자주: 맨유의 별칭)이 4번, 시티즌(*편집자주: 맨체스터시티의 별칭)이 2번 승리했습니다. 또한, 리그컵 경기에서도 4차례 맞붙어 시티가 2번, 유나이티드가 1번 이겼으며 무승부가 1번 있었습니다. 역대 한 차례 있었던 양 팀 간 커뮤니티실드 경기는 유나이티드의 승리로 끝났습니다.

지난 시즌에는 2008년 11월에는 시티오브맨체스터 스타디움에서 1-0, 2009년 5월 올드트래퍼드에서는 2-0으로 유나이티드가 두 차례 모두 승리를 거머쥐었습니다. 하지만 그 전 시즌에 시티가 홈에서 1-0, 어웨이에서 2-1로 승리했던 전적을 감안한다면 서로 빚을 갚은 것에 불과했습니다.

맨체스터더비에서 최다 골 기록을 보유하고 있는 선수는 시티 출신인 고(故) 조 헤이스(Joe Hayes)와 프랜시스 리(Francis Lee)로 둘 다 10골씩을 기록했습니다. 반면에, 유나이티드 선수로는 보비 찰튼이 9골을 넣었습니다. 한편, 유나이티드의 전설인 라이언 긱스는 지금까지 맨체스터더비에 30회 출전하여 최다 출전기록을 보유하고 있습니다.

경계를 넘나들다

올해 모두의 관심은 아르헨티나 출신 스트라이커 카를로스 테베즈(Carlos Tevez)에게 쏠려 있습니다. 테베즈는 올 여름 붉은색 유나이티드 유니폼을 벗고 푸른색 시티 유니폼으로 갈아 입었습니다. 하지만 테베즈가 맨체스터의 양쪽 클럽 모두에서 활약한 최초의 선수는 아닙니다.

전설적인 스코틀랜드 출신 스트라이커 데니스 로(Denis Law)는 1974년 자신의 리그 마지막 경기에서 친정팀 유나이티드를 상대로 그 유명한 결승골을 성공시켰습니다. 레드데빌은 이 시즌을 마치고 하위 리그로 강등되고 말았습니다. 역시 유나이티드에서 전설적인 선수였으며 ‘위대한 덴마크인’으로 불리던 골키퍼 피터 슈마이켈(Peter Schmeichel)도 두 구단에 소속되어 있는 동안 맨체스터더비 무패라는 진기한 기록을 갖고 있습니다. 그는 유나이티드에서 9시즌, 시티에서 1시즌을 뛰는 동안 더비 경기에서 한번도 패한 적이 없습니다.

올 시즌 첫 번째 맨체스터더비는 9월 20일 올드트래퍼드에서 열렸습니다. 유나이티드는 경기 종료 직전 마이클 오언이 결승골을 터뜨리면서 4-3으로 승리했고 알렉스 퍼거슨 감독은 이 시합을 ‘역대 최고의 더비 경기’로 평가했습니다.

Saints and Heathens

On 12 November 1881, West Gorton (St Marks) invited Newton Heath to a friendly match which the visitors won 3-0 and a local rivalry began. Then, in November 1894, the two clubs met in the Football League for the first time, with Newton Heath again successful, winning 5-2 away at Hyde Road. Today, the Saints (St Marks) are known as Manchester City and the Heathens (Newton Heath) have become Manchester United.

The rivalry is now known as the Manchester derby and what a rivalry it has become. United claim to be the biggest club in the world while the newly-enriched City claim to be the richest club in the world.

The better half

United fans will be quick to tell you that the Reds have been the most successful of the two clubs in Manchester derbies but they are not as dominant as they would have you believe. In the league, United has won 31 times at home and 25 times away, while City has won 22 matches at home and 15 away and there have been 48 draws.

The clubs have also met six times in the FA Cup, with the Red Devils winning four and the Citizens winning two. Additionally, they have played each other four times in the League Cup, with two wins for City, one for United and one draw and United won their only match in the Community Shield.

United won both games last season, winning 1-0 at the City of Manchester Stadium in November last year and 2-0 at Old Trafford in May. However, this merely equalled City’s achievement of the previous season when the Blues won 1-0 at home and 2-1 away.

However, the most successful goalscorers in the Manchester derby have both been City players, the late Joe Hayes and Francis Lee, who each scored ten goals while United’s record goalscorer is Bobby Charlton with nine goals. United legend, Ryan Giggs, meanwhile holds the record for the most appearances in a Manchester derby having played in 30 matches so far.

Crossing the divide

All eyes this year were on the Argentinean striker, Carlos Tevez who swapped the red shirt of United for the sky blue shirt of City this summer. However, Tevez is not the first player to cross the Mancunian divide and play for both Manchester clubs.

The legendary Scottish striker, Denis Law, famously scored a winning goal for City against his beloved United in his last ever league game in 1974 in a season that saw the Red Devils relegated. Another United legend, ‘the Great Dane’, goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, also played for both clubs and has a unique unbeaten record for both clubs in the Manchester derby, having spent nine seasons at United and one at City without ever losing a derby match.

The first of this season’s Manchester derbies was played at Old Trafford on 20 September. United triumphed 4-3 with a last minute winner from Michael Owen, in what Alex Ferguson called ‘the best derby of all time’.
