IELTS Tips – Reading – Skimming and scanning

In the Reading Section of the Academic Module, there are 3 long texts with a total of 40 questions in 60 minutes. So, that means you have 20 minutes per text.

This part of the test was chosen as the most difficult part of the test in one survey, mainly because of the lack of time.

Therefore you should not read the text slowly without looking at the questions, but rather read the questions first and use your skimming and scanning skills to answer as quickly as possible:

  • Skimming is when you quickly go through a text to find the general meaning e.g. by reading just the first sentence of each paragraph.

  • Scanning is when you quickly search for a word/ number / phrase etc. Sometimes this will be the answer to the question and sometimes this will indicate the part of the text, maybe a few lines, that you need to read slowly and carefully to answer the question.

  • Remember there are  different types of questions: multiple choice, short-answer questions, sentence completion, notes/summary/diagram/flow-chart/table completion, labelling a diagram, classification, matching, choosing suitable paragraph headings from a list, identification of writer’s views/claims – yes, no or not given, identification of information in the text – true, false or not given.

  • Unlike the listening, there is no extra time to transfer your answers. It’s probably better to do it after each text and not to leave all of it to the last few minutes .... for obvious reasons!

Good luck!
