프리미어리그의 다혈질들

축구계는 요구하는 연봉 수준만큼이나 높은 자의식을 가진 인물들로 넘쳐 납니다. 그러고 보면 축구계 유명인사들이 연루된 갈등이 심심치 않게 터져 나오는 것도 그리 놀랄 일은 아닙니다. 이런 사건들에는 비단 선수나 감독뿐만 아니라 구단주들까지도 관련되곤 합니다. 이런 불화로 인해 구단 내에서는 심각한 내부 문제를 일으키기도 하지만 언론에서는 이 같은 불협화음을 폭로하고 과장하기를 더할 나위 없이 좋아합니다.

집안 싸움

축구 경기에서 상대 편 선수와 대립하는 장면은 보기 드문 경우는 아닙니다. 하지만 같은 팀 소속 선수들끼리라면 클럽의 입장에서는 정말 난처한 일이 아닐 수 없습니다. 키에론 다이어(Kieron Dyer)와 리 보이어(Lee Bowyer)는 과거 뉴캐슬에서 함께 뛰던 시절에 경기장에서 서로 주먹을 주고 받은 끝에 상대 팀 애스턴빌라의 가레스 배리(Gareth Barry)가 중간에 끼어 들어 말린 후에야 간신히 싸움을 멈춘 적이 있습니다. 

프리미어리그 챔피언이 되는 것도 블랙번 팀 동료였던 그램 르 소(Graeme Le Saux)와 데이빗 배티(David Batty) 사이의 관계를 개선하는 데에는 별다른 도움이 되지 못했던 모양입니다. 챔피언스리그 경기에서 상대 팀 스파르타크 모스크바 선수들은 두 사람이 거친 욕설을 교환하다 급기야 난투극을 벌이는 장면을 흥미롭게 지켜봤습니다. 

2008년 1월에는 같은 아스날 소속이었던 니콜라스 벤트너(Nicolas Bendtner)와 이마뉴엘 아데바요르(Emmanuel Adebayor)가 전세계 팬들 앞에서 두 사람이 절친한 친구 사이는 아니라는 사실을 보여줬습니다. 토튼햄과의 경기 도중 아데바요르가 벤트너의 머리를 박치기한 것이지요. 하지만 이들 중 그 누구도 맨체스터시티 소속 미드필더였던 조이 바튼(Joey Barton)에는 미치지 못합니다. 팀 훈련 중에 당시 동료였던 오스만 다보(Ousmane Dabo)의 태클을 당한 바튼은 악의적인 보복에 나섰고 이후에 폭행 혐의로 입건됐습니다.

누가 위인지 보여주다

알렉스 퍼거슨(Sir Alex Ferguson) 맨체스터 유나이티드 감독은 프리미어리그 역사상 가장 존경 받고 성공한 감독 중 한 사람으로 인정받고 있습니다. 그는 항상 엄격한 기준을 요구하며 그 기준을 만족시키지 못할 경우 불 같이 화를 내는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 퍼거슨 감독의 눈 밖에 난 많은 스타 플레이어들이 결국 팀을 떠났습니다. 루드 반 니스텔루이(Ruud Van Nistelroy)와 야프 스탐(Jaap Stam)이 감독의 퇴출 대상 명단에 오른 후에 클럽을 나가야 했습니다. 

퍼거슨 감독이 진노했던 가장 유명한 일화는 팀이 형편없는 경기를 펼친 직후에 탈의실에서 축구화를 신경질적으로 걷어찼던 사건입니다. 불행히도 축구화는 데이빗 베컴(David Beckham)의 머리로 곧장 날아갔고 베컴은 상처를 봉합하는 수술을 받아야 했습니다. 퍼거슨 감독은 사과를 거부했고 베컴은 그 일을 대수롭지 않게 넘겼지만 그 역시 팀을 떠나는 다음 대열에 합류하게 되었습니다. 하지만 알렉스 경이 크리스티아누 호날두가 레알 마드리드로 이적하기 전까지 그를 다루었던 방식을 보면 그가 스타 플레이어를 대하는 태도가 많이 누그러진 것처럼 보입니다. 호날두는 물론 재능있는 선수이긴 하지만 그 또한 프리미어리그에서 활동하던 동안 그의 불 같은 성격과 헐리웃 액션(아래 편집자 주 참조)으로 몇몇 친구들(?)을 만들었습니다.  

올드 트래퍼드에서는 퍼거슨 감독이 철권 통치를 하고 있는지 모르지만 다른 클럽에서는 내부 충돌에서 선수가 승자가 된 경우도 여러 번 있었습니다. 아마도 1999년 뉴캐슬이 가장 유명한 사례일 것입니다. 루드 굴리트 감독(Rudd Gullit)은 클럽의 영웅이었던 앨런 시어러(Alan Shearer)를 거의 출장시키지 않으면서 자신이 함께 했던 선수들 중 가장 과대평가된 선수라고 폄하했습니다. 뉴캐슬 팬들은 감독의 평가에 전혀 동의하지 않았습니다. 시어러를 1진에서 제외한 결정은 결국 감독 자신의 무덤을 파는 결과를 가져왔고 얼마 후에 감독직에서 쫓겨 나고 말았습니다.

Temper Tantrums

The world of football is full of individuals with egos almost as large as their salary demands. It should be no surprise then that over the years there have been some high profile disputes, between big names in the game. These bust ups can involve players, managers and even the chairmen. Whilst such disharmony can cause huge internal problems within clubs, the media loves nothing more than to expose and exaggerate any disagreements.

Unhappy Families

Seeing two players from opposing teams square up to one another in football is not unusual, but if they are from the same team it can be very embarrassing for their club. When they both played for Newcastle, Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer had to be split up by Aston Villa player Gareth Barry after trading blows on the pitch.

Becoming Premier League champions didn’t seem to help the relationship between Blackburn teammates Graeme Le Saux and David Batty either. During a Champion’s League match, the opposition Spartak Moscow players looked on in bemusement as an exchange of angry words between the players quickly turned into a brawl. 

In January 2008, former Arsenal team-mates Nicolas Bendtner and Emmanuel Adebayor showed fans around the world that they were far from being the best of friends, when Adebayor headbutted Bendtner during a game against Tottenham. However, none of these players went as far as former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton. After being tackled during a Manchester City training session by teammate Ousmane Dabo, Barton launched a vicious attack on the French player and was later charged with assault.

Showing who the boss is

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most respected and successful managers in Premier League history. He has always had high standards and when these standards aren’t met, he has been known to blow a fuse. A string of high profile players have left the club after displeasing the manager. Ruud Van Nistelroy and Jaap Stam were both shown the exit door, after getting in his bad books.

However, the most famous example of Ferguson’s rage came when he angrily kicked a football boot in the dressing room after a poor performance by his team. Unfortunately the boot connected with the head of David Beckham, leaving him in need of stitches. Ferguson refused to apologise and whilst Beckham made light of the incident, he was next in a line of stars to leave. Sir Alex seems to be taking a softer approach with his star players these days, as shown by the way he dealt with Cristiano Ronaldo. And though Ronaldo is a talented footballer, his own tantrums and diving* made him few friends while he played in the Premier League.

Ferguson may have a firm grip on power at Old Trafford, but there have been times when players have come out on top during internal club battles. Perhaps the most famous example of this came at Newcastle in 1999. Rudd Gullit had little time for local hero Alan Shearer when he managed the club and described him as the most over-rated player he had worked with. The Newcastle fans clearly didn’t agree with the manager’s assessment of Shearer’s qualities. The Dutchman’s decision to drop the striker from the first team proved to be the final nail in his coffin, as he was sacked shortly after.  

The Money Men

Much of the internal fighting reported these days seems to start in the boardroom as opposed to the dressing room. The ownership of Liverpool has been the subject of a very public power struggle between Tom Hicks and George Gillet.

Even more embarrassing has been the recent turmoil at frequently troubled Newcastle. The problems there last year were between a popular manager known to the fans as ‘God’ and chairman, Mike Ashley, whose attempts to win over the fans have failed miserably. Many of the disagreements at Newcastle were related to disagreements over player transfers. 

However, nobody there has gone as far as Juventus player, Tiago. Following a disagreement with Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli over a proposed move to Everton, the Portuguese star locked the chairman in a toilet in protest.  Maybe former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan should have tried this.
