맨체스터 유나이티드 - 영예의 등번호 7번

유니폼 등번호가 처음으로 등장한 것은 1928년의 일로 당시에는 1번부터 11번까지의 번호가 사용됐습니다. 축구협회에서 선발 라인업에 적용되던 1~11번 제도를 폐지한 것은 1993년으로 지금은 새 시즌이 돌아올 때마다 자유롭게 등번호를 바꿀 수 있도록 허용하고 있지만 대다수 선수들은 자신만의 고유한 번호를 고수하고 있습니다.

맨체스터유나이티드 구단 역사를 통해 무수한 스타 선수들이 등장했으며 그 중에는 7번을 달지 않았던 선수들도 많습니다. 찰튼이나 로, 긱스, 루니가 대표적입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 전통에는 시대를 초월하는 신비감이 깃들어 있으며 구단에서 배출한 걸출한 스타들이 대대로 이 번호에 애착을 갖게 되었습니다.

맨체스터 유나이티드가 2007, 2008년에 이어 2009년에도 바클레이즈 잉글리시 프리미어리그 챔피언에 등극한 지금, 맨유의 과거부터 현재까지 등번호 7번을 달았던 선수들을 살펴보는 것도 의미가 있을 것입니다. 

시초

유명한 선수들

늘 논란을 몰고 다니며 강한 카리스마에 활력을 불어넣던 ‘킹 에릭’이 맨유를 떠난 지 11년이 지났지만 그의 이름은 오늘날까지도 스트레포드 엔드 (* 편집자 주: 올드 트래포드의 서쪽 스탠드의 별칭)에서 울려 퍼지고 있습니다. 칸토나가 입단했던 1992년 11월, 맨유는 지지부진한 시즌을 반복하고 있었습니다. 그는 득점과 어시스트를 기록하며 팀에 곧바로 적응했습니다. 팬들을 그를 사랑했고 그는 팀을 결집시켰습니다. 팀에 활력을 불어 넣은 칸토나는 입단 다음 해인 1993년에 맨유를 원년도 프리미어리그 우승으로 이끌었습니다. 그가 긱스, 베컴, 스콜스, 버트와 개리 네빌 등 유망주에게 미친 영향은 지대했습니다. 2001년에 칸토나는 ‘맨유 20세기의 선수’로 선정됐습니다.

현재

2003년에 맨유에 입단한 크리스티아누 호날두는 등번호 7번이 주는 부담감을 두려워한 나머지 28번을 요구했습니다. 하지만 퍼거슨 감독은 “아니, 자네는 7번이네”라고 못을 박았습니다. 그 이후로 호날두는 화려한 기술과 득점력으로 전세계 팬들을 열광시키면서 ‘올해의 선수상’을 휩쓸고 있습니다. 2007/08 시즌에 호날두는 총 42골을 기록했으며, 2008/09 시즌 시작 무렵에는 비록 발목부상으로 인해 몇 경기를 결장할 수 밖에 없었지만 몸 상태가 정상으로 회복된 후에는 절정의 기량을 선보이면서 2008년 10월, 국제프로축구선수협회(FiFPro) 선정 올해의 선수상, 12월에는 프랑스 축구전문지 ‘프랑스 풋볼’이 수여하는 ‘발롱도르(Ballon d'Or)’상을 수상하였습니다. 또한 2009년 1월에는 맨유 선수로서는 처음으로 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 올해의 선수상을 받는 등 세계 축구의 정점으로 인정받게 되었습니다. 작년 시즌이 끝난 후 그가 레알 마드리드로 이적할 것이라는 소문이 무성했음에도 불구하고 호날두는 맨유의 7번 자리를 지키며 08/09 시즌에도 위와 같은 뛰어난 활약을 보였습니다. 하지만 마침내 어제, 2009년 6월 11일, 맨유가 역대 최고 이적료를 경신한 8천만 파운드 (한화 약 1,600억원)에 호날두의 레알 마드리드행에 동의했다는 발표가 나왔습니다. 이제부터 다음 시즌에 맨유에서 등번호 7번을 달고 뛸 선수를 짐작해보는 것도 흥미로울 것 같습니다!

The Magnificent Sevens

Numbers on the backs of shirts were first used in 1928 when the players wore numbers 1 to 11 on their shirts. It wasn’t until 1993 that the FA abandoned the use of 1-11 for the starting line-up and, although players now are allowed to change their numbers in between seasons, a lot of them don’t and so become identified with a particular number.

There is no shortage of brilliant players in Manchester United’s history, many of whom didn’t wear number 7: Charlton, Law, Giggs and Rooney to name but a few. However, there is an enduring mythical quality about the number and some of the club’s greatest names have been attached to it.

Manchester United have been crowned Premier League Champions for 2009 and this is three consecutive titles since 2007. So it would be interesting to look through the Manchester United’s players who have worn number 7, and  who might have contributed most to the victories from the past to the present. 

The first

Teammate Pat Crerand said that George Best had “twisted blood”; Pele called him the greatest player in the world. He was the first true superstar of football. He joined United at 17 and by 26 had packed in the game. He won two League Championship medals, a European Cup winner’s medal, was voted European Footballer of the Year and was United’s top goal scorer five times. He died on 25 November 2005 at the age of 59 and is fondly remembered as a genius and a United legend. Best was the player who started the legend of the number seven shirt.

United’s longest serving captain, Bryan Robson, moved to United from West Bromwich Albion in October 1981 for a then record £1.5 million. Robson earned 90 caps for England and captained United to three FA Cup wins - the only player in the twentieth century to do so - plus a European Cup Winner’s Cup and two Premiership titles. Robson became a huge figure at Old Trafford due to his incredible work rate and inspirational presence. He always gave 110%, whether in England’s white shirt or the red of United.

Famous faces

Controversial, charismatic, inspirational; “King Eric” left United over eleven years ago but his name is still chanted by the Stretford End to this day. When Cantona joined United in November 1992, United were limping through another lacklustre season. He settled immediately into the team, both scoring goals and creating goals for others. The fans loved him and he brought the team together; he was the inspiration that drove United to the inaugural Premiership title the following year in 1993. His influence on the emerging talents of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, Butt and Gary Neville was immeasurable. In 2001 he was voted Manchester United Player of the Century.

One of the most famous faces on the planet, David Beckham, was an integral part of the 1999 Treble winning team. He became part of the United set-up at an early age, signing schoolboy forms on his fourteenth birthday. When Cantona left in May 1997, Beckham gave incoming player Teddy Sheringham his number 10 shirt and took the number 7 for himself. In 2003, following a number of highly publicised spats with Sir Alex Ferguson, Beckham left United to join Real Madrid. The club captain Raúl wore the number 7, so Beckham took the number 23 jersey in honour of basketball player Michael Jordan. After that, he wore number 23 at LA Galaxy and 32 at AC Milan.

Today

When Cristiano Ronaldo joined United in 2003, he asked for the number 28 shirt, afraid of the burden of expectation that came with the number 7. However, Ferguson declined, saying “No, you’re going to have number 7”. Since then, he has gone on to amaze spectators around the world with his skills and goal scoring ability, winning numerous Player of the Year awards. In 2008/09 season, he was named FIFA Pro Player of the Year in October, and in December became the first United player since George Best in 1968 to be awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy. To cap it off, in January 2009, he became the first Red to win the FIFA World Player of the Year award. It has just been announced that Manchester United have accepted an offer of £80 million for Ronaldo from Real Madrid (11 June 2009).
