At the end of last season, Arsenal fans voted for the Gunners’ Greatest Players and Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Tony Adams filled the top three places in the fans’ poll. As I looked at the list of fifty Arsenal legends chosen, I wondered who would appear in a greatest ever Arsenal team, so this is my selection.
At the back
Between the posts, I’d ignore the safe hands of David Seaman in favour of the match-winning qualities of Pat Jennings. A huge figure, the Northern Irishman was very agile and athletic and had incredible reactions but was also a calm and composed figure in times of trouble. He spent eight years at Arsenal and played over a thousand games in his 22-year career.
In central defence, would be my captain, and Arsenal’s greatest ever captain, Tony Adams, a rock at the back, brave, fearless, powerful and utterly reliable but also a born leader who would inspire his talented team-mates to even greater heights. He won four league titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup in 668 matches over nineteen seasons at the club, including fourteen years as captain. Beside him I would give another England international, Sol Campbell, the nod in view of his pace and power ahead of Martin Keown, David O’Leary and several others. Campbell, like Jennings, moved to Arsenal from rivals Tottenham and won two league titles and two FA Cups in five seasons at the club.
On the flanks, I’d have two more Englishmen, Lee Dixon at right-back and Ashley Cole at left-back. Dixon was an under-rated player who never let the side down and had boundless energy and enthusiasm, while Cole was, and still is, an immensely talented player with great pace as well as exceptional levels of determination and concentration.
In the middle
In central midfield, I’d choose the little and large combination of Liam Brady and Patrick Vieira. The little Irishman, Brady, was Arsenal’s star of the ‘70s and was a wonderfully gifted player with a magical left foot who could create goals from almost anywhere. The Frenchman, Vieira, spent nine years at the club and was an immense figure that could dominate matches and was always the first into battle when things got difficult.
On the wings would be the Frenchman, Robert Pires and the Dutch express, Marc Overmars. Pires was deceptively quick and surprisingly rugged despite his slight frame. He had a great engine and scored many vital goals in his six seasons at the club.
Overmars was a very different type of winger who could simply destroy teams on his own with his blistering pace. He spent only three seasons at the club but still had a devastating impact in his prime.
In attack
And up front, the choice is simple- Bergkamp and Henry, undoubtedly the two greatest players ever to wear an Arsenal shirt and both supremely talented, although the fans are split down the middle as to who was the greatest.
The Dutchman, Bergkamp, wasn’t the fastest striker but he had magical skills and superb close control which allowed to him to create opportunities to shoot or to make that killer pass that would create a golden chance for a team-mate to score. He won three League titles and four FA Cups in his eleven seasons at the club, and was PFA Player of the Year and Footballer of the Year in 1998.
Henry holds the club goal-scoring record with 226 goals in 380 games during his eight-year spell at the club when he was captain, superstar and talisman. He was effectively the face of Arsenal and he was incredibly talented and skilful as well as being a wonderful finisher. The Frenchman was runner-up in the World Player of the Year awards in both 2003 and 2004 and won two League titles and two FA Cups with the club as well as two PFA Player of the Year awards and three Footballer of the Year awards.
