영국 축구 경기장의 진짜 매력 - 2부 | Something in the Air - Part Two

일본인 기자 코키 하라다는 영국 경기장이 왜 독특한지에 대해 생각해 보았습니다: 경기장 자체일까? 아니면 즐거움? 그것도 아니면 유별난 팬들?

연극과 같은 축구

영국의 축구 경기장은 독특한 구조물로서 네 면이 모두 높이 솟은 스탠드로 둘러싸여 있습니다. 지붕과 함께 스탠드는 하늘과 외부 경관이 보이지 않도록 가로막고 있기 때문에, 관중들의 시선은 자연히 경기장 안쪽으로 향하게 됩니다. 그리고 축구 전용 경기장이기 때문에 관중은 선수를 가까이에서 볼 수 있고, 축구경기 관람을 방해할 높은 펜스 같은 것은 전혀 없습니다. 선수들의 고함과 공차는 소리, 팬들의 구호와 함성 – 이 모든 소리가 전부 경기장 내부로 향하면서 경기장 분위기를 긴장시키게 되지요.

저라면 영국에서의 축구경기 관람을 오페라나 뮤지컬 공연 관람에 비유하고 싶습니다. 극장들은 무대의 스포트라이트, 오케스트라석에서 흘러나올 음악과 함께 음향효과를 염두에 두고 설계합니다. 그것은 긴장과 집중의 효과를 나타내서, 배우와 관객을 하나로 만들게 되지요.

공연 전 미리 바에서 술 한잔을 하면서 분위기를 맛볼 수 있을 것이고 중간 쉬는 시간에는 공연의 전반부를 평하면서 한 잔 더 마시게 되겠지요. 공연이 끝날 무렵에는 모두가 비평가가 되어서, 식당으로 향할 수도 있을 것이고 혹은 집으로 와서 다시 일상으로 돌아올 수도 있을 것입니다.

영국에서 축구경기 관람은 이와 같이 공연을 관람하는 것과 유사합니다. 때때로 축구팀들은 패배 후에 관중들의 엄청난 야유에 직면할 수도 있지만, 환호와 갈채를 받는 경우도 드물지 않습니다. 항상 선수들을 존중하는 것을 잊지 않으며, 무대에서 멋진 공연을 펼치지 못한 무용가나 배우를 위해 박수를 보내는 것과 비슷한 제스처를 취하기도 합니다. 서포터즈들은 자기가 응원하는 팀이 경기를 잘 못하거나 심지어 3포인트를 잃는다고 해도 (편집자 주: 패배했다고 해도) 나름대로 경기를 즐기는 방법을 알고 있는 것이지요.

더 에미레이트 스타디움은 네 면 모두 스탠드로 둘러싸여 있는 전통적 영국식 축구장과는 다르게 건축되었습니다. 참 아쉬운 점이지요. 비록 이 최신식 경기장의 원형 디자인이 관중들에게 멋진 경관을 선사하고 있긴 하지만, 경기장 내부 설계는 ‘긴장된’ 분위기를 고조시키거나 유발하지 못하고 있습니다.

스탠드는 하늘을 향해 열리도록 설계되어 있어, 경기의 긴장감을 높이는데 필수적인 요소가 빠져버리고 말았습니다. 긴장된 분위기 연출에 있어 최고의 경기장인 하이버리 경기장 (편집자 주: 더 에미레이트 이전에 아스날이 사용하던 홈 경기장)과는 극명한 대조를 이루고 있습니다. 저는 이와 같은 변화가 아스날이 지난 시즌에 좋은 시작을 보여주지 못하는데 기여를 했으리라고 생각합니다.

잉글랜드 사람이거나 스코틀랜드 사람이거나, 혹은 선수나 관중이거나 상관없이 영국 축구를 발전시키는 아드레날린으로 작용하는 것은 바로 긴장된 분위기 입니다. – 그것이 경기의 필수적인 요소이지요.

Japanese journalist Koki Harada ponders just why British stadiums are unique: is it the construction, the entertainment, or the fans that make the difference?

Theatrical Football

British stadiums are unique constructs, with all four sides of the pitch closed in by towering stands. They, along with a roof, block out the sky and all outside scenery, and so the spectator's attention is naturally drawn towards the pitch. And since they are purpose-built for football, the crowd can get close to the players and there are no tall fences to obstruct the view. The shouts of the players, the sound of the ball being kicked, the chanting and screaming of the fans - all these sounds are hemmed into the interior of a stadium and create tension in the air.

I could liken it to going to the opera or a musical. Theatres are designed with acoustics in mind, and with a spotlight on the stage and music from the orchestra pit, the effect is intense; actors and spectators become one. You might get in the mood beforehand with a drink at the bar, perhaps another in the interval while discussing the first half of the show. By the end of the performance, everyone is a critic, some heading off to a restaurant, others heading for home and back to reality.

In Britain, watching football is similar to attending such a show. Although at times, teams may face thunderous boos from the crowd in the wake of a defeat, applause is not uncommon. Respect is never forgotten, a gesture similar to putting your hands together for a dancer or an actor that has just failed to deliver a great performance on stage. These supporters know how to enjoy a game of football even when their teams under perform, or worse still, drop 3 points.

The Emirates Stadium does not fall in line with traditional British constructs in which the four sides of the pitch are closed-in by a stand. This is regrettable. Although the circular design of this ultra-modern stadium presents spectators with great views, the interior does not enhance or create that 'tense' atmosphere. The stand is designed and structured to open towards the sky and thus, vital ingredients for match tension can not be contained. It is a huge contrast to Highbury, renowned as one of the best stadiums for such intense atmosphere, and I feel the change may have attributed to Arsenal's poor start to last season.

English, Scottish, player or spectator, British football thrives on a tense atmosphere that acts as adrenaline - an essential part of the game.
